Now to work on the MESA itself, which are parts 300a/b(2)/c/d/e/f/g. That makes a total of 8 pieces from UHU02's original. However, I will make a few enhancements thanks to the generous assistance and inspiration of Tonino (Papermodelers forum member). He provided a copy of some upgrades he made to his build, and I will incorporate similar into the MESA.

300a is the main body of the MESA. There are quite a few intricate cuts for the frame of the folding table. For Tonino's upgrades, I cut out a few extra holes. The 'depth' layer was provided by Tonino. Those were added to the underside attached with small spacers to provide depth. I also cut out some of the surface mounted tools for the MESA to add more visual depth.

There are 2 300b parts which are simple boxes. I mounted them to the surface of the MESA, but ended up repositioning them further toward the middle since they interfered with the blankets.

300c is the scoop which is formed with 2-sided printing.

300d is the TV camera tripod which basically folds into a tent shape to mount to the top of the MESA.

300e is the TV camera mount.

300f is the TV camera body and 300g is the TV camera handle which is a tiny tube. I formed it using a small diameter mandrel.

After the MESA was assembled, it was fitted to the blanket and case on Quad IV. Pretty cool!

All the Quad components are now complete! Quite a milestone.

Part count to date (not counting the upgrades from Tonino): 613

I'm very glad you found an use for my additional parts. Your MESA is really wonderful! Another gem added to the big treasure.

There are 4 sets of parts 302 through 315 for the landing gear assemblies.

Parts 302 and 305 are folded in half for 2-sided printing along with an attachment wing. Parts 303 and 306 are folded into a U shape around parts 304 and 307. I trimmed away the voids from the printed parts then coated them with superglue for strength before assembly.

The landing gear tubes of part 308a were folded in half for 2-sided printing. Part 308b is attached to form a cup to receive the main gear joint.

There are 2 parts 309 per landing gear assembly. They are a disc that goes on the upper leg of the landing gear. It will come into play later in the build in connection with the skins.

Parts 310a is folded in half and attached along with part 310b to form the end cap and joint for attaching the main landing gear tubes which are part 311.

Part 311 is a simple tube, but one of them is printed a bit different than the other 3 since it includes the attachment points for the ladder later in the build. To make the landing gear nice and strong, and to assist with shaping the tubes, I wrapped them around popsicle sticks. Part 312 is wrapped around the tube as an additional layer where part of the landing gear braces attach, one of which has a little different printing to go with the one where the ladder attaches.

Part 313a is folded in half for 2-sided printing and attached along with 313b to form the end cap and joint for attaching the feet of the landing gear.

Parts 314a/b/c/ and 315a/b/c form the inner and outer plates of the landing gear.

Once all the landing gear components were formed, they were a bit finicky to put into place, but otherwise assembly is straight forward.

A whopping 88 parts for the gear so far!

Next is the ladder and egress platform.

Part 316 is the ladder. (Not sure why, but UHU02 included 2 ladders in his parts sheets. The other is part 369. Perhaps the 2nd one was included in case the first one had to be destroyed for installing skins.) To give the part realistic finishes I used aluminum tape on both sides. For a clean fold of the rails I used a photo-etch bending tool.

Parts 317ab are for the egress platform itself. They are glued back to back for two sided printing. The actual platform on the LEM was corrugated, so for surface dimension I attached strips of card stock then used aluminum tape on both sides to give it a realistic metallic finish. I also added a bit of gold colored paper on the corners. Parts 318 and 319 are the handrails. They are folded in half for two-sided printing. I also used aluminum tape on both side for realistic metallic finish.

To improve the realism, I replaced the printed pull handles on 316 and 318 with wire bent to the proper shape.

These assemblies will be attached as part of the final touches after the skins are installed.

Now the part I have really been looking forward to for years...the skins!

For this part of the build my plan is to first do test fitting of the skins to make sure they are sized properly and to do a walk-through of how to attach them to minimize any unexpected problems for the final installation.

The panels are being glued to gold wrapping paper to simulate the interior protective film. The wrapping paper will also serve as tabs for the overlapping seams. I then formed them around the model using masking tape to hold them in place temporarily.

The skins temporarily installed so far are parts numbered 320ab, 321ab, 322, 323, 324ab, 325, 326, 328, and 330. I was unable to find any part numbered 327. Part 329 is the docking target so I will hold off on that until final assembly.

Part 331 is an S-Band antenna, and Parts 332ab is a steam vent, so I will wait until finishing the skins before building up those parts. I could not find a part numbered 333.

The skins for the front section are 334a/b/c, 335, 336, 337a/b, and 338. I built them up similar to the other sections to test fit.

Just seeing this thread for the first time, are you saying you've taken on a Uhu model for your second ever paper model? You're a braver man than I, I've been building paper models for years and some of his models still scare me.

Not sure if you've mentioned it earlier in the thread but do you have a link/brand for this silver tape? That looks like something I could definitely make use of.

Great work so far on the LM.

Jaffro...Thank you for your kind words. Yes, this is just the 2nd paper model I have built. While overall it is rather complex, at the core it is just a large collection of a lot of very simple models. UHU02 has excellent visual instructions so the steps are pretty easy to follow. I have learned a lot along the way, but honestly I’m not really that skilled. Another major factor is that it is a subject matter that I enjoy a lot so it has held my interest.

The tape has the website IPG - Intertape Polymer Group on it, but I don’t really remember where I got it. I think I just did a web search for “aluminum foil tape.” Seems to be pretty common stuff you can buy at most hardware stores. I think it is mainly used to seal up leaks on HVAC ductwork. I got what seemed to be the thinnest I could find.

I got some other adhesive film that I plan to try on the skins called UltraTrim from Hangar 9. It is used mainly for graphics on radio controlled airplanes. Found it on Amazon. Seems to closely match the LEM colors I was looking for, is really thin, and easy to cut. I’m excited to try it out and see what everyone thinks. Stay tuned!
