Apollo CM/SM Project

Hello fellow papermodelers,
Today being the 45th anniversary of the first moon landing I can`t think of a better day to officially begin my Apollo command and service module project. It will be the perfect companion to my lunar module, keeping it at the same scale at 1/24th. The launch escape tower will also be included in the kit. Service Modules differed from one to the other as I was probably going to do Apollo 15. Let me know if you have a favorite. The top section of the Command Module will be removable to show the interior. The last few screenshots from metasequoia will give you an idea how this will work.

See you on the next orbit,
Bill

Corvettnutts, I am very happy to see you turning your outstanding talents to the Command/service module. As for favorites, I really prefer any of the J series missions, would really like to see a highly detailed SIM bay. My thought is that if your lunar module is an H series then maybe give the option to build an H or a J service module. Hope you are not going to shelve the outstanding work you have done on the lunar module. I am very anxious for that to be completed.

This will be a great thread! Looking forward to more updates!

As for missions, I always liked Apollo 17 as it brought the first professional scientist to the moon, but I'll follow you building every other mission, too!

I would suggest matching the LEM to the CM as far as mission-specific details or at least have that as an option. I would love to build them both and mate them for a trans-lunar setup.

Apollo Command and Service Modules...

@ gene1772, thorst, and Gideon,
This project was also brought on by something to do in between spending all my modeling time on the LEM. If I need a break from that then I have this one. Sometimes spending all your time on one project makes it hard to maintain interest. I have no plans setting aside the lunar module because the passion that I have for it. The end result on these two projects ultimately would be for them to all match "mission specific" models. Covering Apollo`s 11 thru 17. A big task at hand...Yep!. For the LEM it would be just a matter of changing some of the color panels and foil blankets and sticking a rover on the quad (if no experiments were built into the descent stage). Separate models or one model that comes with all optional parts? The service module...basically the colors are the same throughout.....only changes in sim bays etc. Again....separate models or one model with all optional parts. We will work out all these questions and details out, as I`m sure more will also arise. Thank you for your interest in the thread.

See ya on the next orbit,
Bill

Csm

Hello all,
Here are a few screenshots of the basic layout of the service module to this point. Sectors 1 and 2 plus sectors 5 and 6 will have removeable outer skins to show the interior. There are 6 sectors that go counter clockwise that house all the equipment, fuel cells, etc. Sector 1 houses the SIM bay.

more later,
bill

I believe Mr. Hanners mentioned elsewhere that this is the Golden Age of Space Card Modeling...and I agree. This project is definitely a large part of it. Looking forward to building this and your LM.

Thank you for taking on this large project.
