Good idea Les, I was making a model of this craft and created a paper sphere with the hex pattern that I folded and glued , looked good though.

Your Welcome Ed, I used to make models for the grandsons but that was put on hold till they get a little older. Paper does not hold up well as a day to day toy...

So here is the Vinyl Printed Heat Shield Pattern applied onto the Vac formed .060 shield.
The material is the same stuff they use to make Vehicle wraps for advertising on city buses etc, etc...the pattern is printed and then a layer of a material called razor is applied that provides UV protection and gives it that nice high gloss.
I think I like this one and will retain it for the model. Not paper but then neither is the Heat Shield
I'm pretty sure you can get the paper to this level with a good high gloss Polyurethane Spray finish, using multiple light coats.

O.K. ........I'm about to ask a stupid question, actually two stupid questions: Did you print this on vinyl or have it printed? and where do you get it?
I must have missed something. I didn't see it mentioned before.

To each his own. Thanks, I ran paper patterns for that very reason.

It is Inkjet printing, but it is solvent based ink.Although they also make a latex based ink to overcome the VOC problems with solvent based ink. Outside the scope of most Home printers. But I'm not sure yet it is impossible, just not willing to sacrifice my printer to test the theory. The material is called IMAGin by Mactac, this is then laminated with a product called Rayzor, which is a clear film that is laminated onto the printed image with pressure rollers. UV resistant, so it provides protection against fading and also stops the ink from being scratched off the surface. Any good sign shop can do this work for ...$$$
