KLW Apollo CM in 1/20
With all the recent Apollo building frenzy taking place, I don't know if there is any interest in another thread but at least I need to notice you that I too have started the build of this model. As promised.
I just couldn't get myself to just build it as is. I always make stuff smaller than intended. So I reduced it to the size of which I think I still can more or less do all the details. After some testprints with the instrument panel, I decided to go for 1/20. That is 60% of the original size. Small enough for me. I also saw Mike Dixon's honeycomb overlay and I also wanted that. So that's another thing I added. I printed the heat shield parts out on one sheet of brown card and backed it with heavy black card to cut out at the same time. The rest of today's work was pretty straightforward. I finished the instrument panel except for the flip switch safeguards and the finger guards. My eyes got too tired. If there is interest in more follow-ups, I am happy to keep you posted here. Over at my weblog I'll do some more elaborate pieces on this build but since there are more people building it over here, I don't think I'll add a lot with yet another elaborate report of the same project. I will add special parts and big updates to this thread, of course. So here's my start with the model of the decade. |

By the way, what strikes me now is that over at the plastic space model sections of forums like ARC, almost everyone is working on a shuttle of some sort in 1/72 or a stack in 1/144. Hopefully this subforum will remain a little more varied in its outings..

1/20 is still quite large, so I would imagine you will have no problem getting all of the detail. The paper and card thicknesses may present a problem - but I think if you keep that in mind and make adjustments accordingly as you go, you should be OK.
I'll be watching - I never get tired of watching others build this model. Ken

The more build threads we have on this model, the better IMO. The fact that you have scaled it down brings a new dynamic to the build and is certain to provide valuable tips and tricks for this model. Most certainly, this thread will be followed by fans of the model (which includes most everyone in the hobby). Thanks for allowing us to come along for the ride.
Press on, PK! Press on!
