Skylab

I wanted to rescale John Jogerst's Skylab from 1:144 scale to 1:87. It's a nice model but at 1:87 scale, it needed more details. So this is what I did. Starting from the aft end, I had to learn Sketchup in order to redesign the gas tank shrouds and to unfold it. The new parts replaced for the original part number 2.

The next step was the OWS. John Jogerst’s OWS had printed on markings for the LH2 feed line fairing, instrument tunnel, and LH2 fill line fairing. I was able to copy the first two from Ton Noteboom’s 1:96 scale Saturn V Skylab payload. Ton’s instrument cover was modified to match both the marking on John Jogerst’s OWS as well as photos that I found on the internet. The LH2 fill line fairing and return line fairing had to be designed from scratch using Sketchup.

I used Weeks drawings to create my own detailed Skylab, many years ago. I just checked and apparently didn't still have any files or photos of that one.

Hello Konstatine, Merzo, Retired_for_now, Lee Anne, and Michael

Thank you for your kind comments and support.

Michael, yes and thank you for telling me about it. I read your thread when I was looking for a free Skylab model about 5 months ago but could not find Carl Hewlitt? (surfduke)’s model on the internet. John Jogerst’s 1-144 scale model was the only one that was available for free. It is a nice scale model in 1:144 scale. But if I wanted the level of detail found in Carl Hewlitt’s model, then I would have design it myself. And so here I am 5 months later try to second guess dimensions from NASA photos. And that brings us to the airlock module. I am not sure if I scaled the EVA opening and the Gemini hatch properly. A couple of weeks ago, I went to the Evergreen Aviation Museum near Portland, Oregon to look at the airlock module that they had on display. Compared to the museum display, my Gemini hatch appears to be oversized. But then I was never sure if the display was a full scale model. In the meantime I have enclosed the patterns for the OWS parts as a way of giving back to the paper modeling community. To be continued... with the Earth Resource Experiment Package (EREP) next time.

Very nice work so far. I've been thinking about building a 1:96 Skylab, only what she'd have looked like had the 2nd solar array and shield not been ripped off (Skylab II in other words).

I'll be following your work that's for sure. And thank you so much for sharing!
