InSight, NASA's new mission to Mars

Just saw this on the web, NASA is preparing it's next spacecraft to the planet Mars called InSight.

InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) is a NASA Discovery Program mission that will place a single geophysical lander on Mars to study its deep interior.

You can read more about it here...Insight: Introduction

This is a mission that the geologists will have a field day with. Any idea of a proposed launch date?

Launch between 8 and 27 March 2016, arrival 20 Sept 2016, nominal end-mission on 18 Sept 2018.

Should be possible to work a mod to the JPL Phoenix lander model. Need round solar arrays (from Ton's early Orion capsule version?) and a new instrument deck (that will be a scratch build if you can find a good photo/plan).

Today{Monday 6/8/2015} the test of the LSDS {Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator} took to the skies over Kauai, Hawaii. The test nose was taken to the edge of the stratosphere, or about 180,000 feet by way of a balloon. Rockets will fire and take it to a speed of Mach 4. Then the deployment of the supersonic inflatable aerodynamic decelerator (SIAD) took place. Almost all aspects of the test went well except to the deployment of the parachutes. At least one might have ripped. wc

I've got a Phoenix deck all drawn out. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow. I never finished it because I couldn't get good enough images of the sides of the box under the deck.

Phoenix Deck

Used this pic to make an overlay that glues over the NASA Polar Lander model to make a Phoenix. I assumed the mechanical details remained the same underneath. Likely a good assumption for insight as well.

That's the same picture I've been tracing to make my deck. I can only hope they'll have a similar one for InSight that I can find to make up the differences.

I also made up an UltraFlex array. If anyone wants it I can upload it to the files section. (I was hoping to eventually finish the whole lander but the sides of the box under the deck will be quite bare without good clear pictures to work from.)

I did something similar when I did a Phoenix model by modifying the Mars Polar Lander. Enlarged the round arrays from Ton and added some supports. Simply glued the new deck over the existing one for the JPL Mars Polar Lander model and added some drawn up boxes and stuff for the new instrument suite.
As said, I left all the underside bits alone. Seemed to be a match between the two landers.

InSight Science Deck pic

If you or anyone looking for a descent picture of the InSight science deck
I think I may found one.
It shows in descent detail the instruments but have no idea of what they are.

I hope this helps.

Picture is below...
