well, so much for “next week” when sir Alfonso said before that the X-acto knife’s gonna have a workout on this, he was not kidding... I have severely underestimated the time needed to complete these pieces... everytime I tried to predict the approximate day that I’ll finish these, I’ll just blew them by in the end... but finally, the next pieces of the truss are finally complete before moving on though, I’d like to say that the delays were not because of the model itself... sir Alfonso did a massively super job on these, it’s not merely a model, but a piece of fine scale engineering... the main reason why I took so long was because of the number of extra details and improvements I decided to add onto the base model... adding them was not difficult, as sir Alfonso’s design makes it really easy to add them on, but the sheer number of individual pieces I added really took its toll on my build time... fortunately though, all of that extra crap I glued on was really worth it so without further to do, here are the latest finished pieces of the ISS model - the S-0 Truss, and the Mobile Base System Last edited by Hans Christian; 08-27-2020 at 11:40 AM. |

Wow! That is a hefty bit of stunning modeling. Inspirational!

for the S-0 Truss, the base model is the same, with the exception of cutting open the spaces on the wiring racks on bulkheads 01 and 02 for better realism...
but from here on in, this is where I went overboard with the detailing... the most visible additions (aside from the EVA handrails I added, like for the rest of the other pieces) were the wiring and cabling detail inside the truss structure... I used the EZ line by Berkshire Junction model railroad supplies, available at most hobby stores selling model railroading items... it is basically a thin string of rubber... basically cut a string to the required length then fix it with some super glue... adding the interior wiring was not that difficult, but the sheer number of what was needed to be added, coupled with some tight spaces inside the truss are what made it a complicated job... and the one that took most of the build time, so much so that I deferred adding the exterior wiring/cabling until when I finally put all of the pieces of the ISS model together... the second big job I did was to make the interior truss beams 3D, to do that, I printed a second copy of the interior wall of the S-0 truss, then individually cut all of the truss beams (except the ones lined up with the bulkheads), then glue them onto their required places... the remaining work was done by adding raised detail like the GPS antennas and other tidbits, making some details pop up, and adding parts originally meant for the 1/100 scale version of the model... for the Mobile Transporter, I used the 1/100 version instead for added realism... basically stock with the exception of the handrail detail and the joust-like probes on the sides, which for it, I used thin plastic sticks like the ones I used on Kibo’s cameras... later, I’m going to add an actual guide rail onto the Trusses in order to make the Mobile Transporter move like the real one... for the Mobile Base System, much of it was sir Alfonso’s base model, with the following mods:
- the EVA handrails - I cut open all of the truss portions for better depth and realism -I changed some of the aft struts using plastic sticks then slapped on some gold color and rubbed them with my fingers to achieve the proper color... - I changed the mounting pads for the PDGFs using a similar diameter wooden BBQ stick - I added the capture latch hook assembly (same as found on the S/P-3 truss payload mounting assemblies and what I also added on the Z-1 Truss) onto the MBS common attachment system (MCAS) - I also added the Camera Light and Pan/tilt assembly onto the white triangular support on the center of the MBS, as well as added the camera and light unit for the Payload and ORU Acommodations end effector*** - lastly, after reviewing some on-orbit photos, I was able to scratchbuild the EVA toolbag that was strapped behind the MBS MCAS... the same EZ line I used for the wiring/cabling detail on the S-0 Truss is also perfect for EVA rigging *** I first applied the CLPAs and the Camera and light unit onto Canadarm 2 and Dextre 4 years ago before I paused the build that time... at this point I’m about to start with the outrigging trusses, beginning with the S-1 Truss... and I’ll apply the same treatment as I did with these two pieces to keep it consistent in detail... oh boy... this is gonna be a chore |

hey guys, just popping the thread back
I was supposed to post photos of the finished S-1 Truss almost a month ago, but I decided to wait until I finish the P-1 Truss (which is almost done as we speak) so that I can post them side by side, and for me to be able to discuss the small mods I did for both segments, and some of the ones unique to each segment... stay tuned guys |
