1/72 Saturn V

After seeing my 1/2500 Saturn V quarter diorama, a coworker challenged me to build the Greelt Peterusma 8' 1:48 Saturn V. This idea was quickly vetoed by my significant other, and so the plan to build the 1:48 Saturn V at 1:72 was born. The availability of an LUT and crawler at 1:72 from EduCraft Diversions sealed the deal.

A test print revealed that I can't just print 2 sheets per page due to the original being laid out for A4. Plus, some of the lines become too thin and don't print, especially the details of the escape tower and shield. I'm in the process of rescaling in Inkscape, and relaying out each page to make sure there will be no issues. I will also be joining parts, now that they can fit on a single sheet, so as to reduce seams. I will not be removing any detail from the original 1:48 model.

In the mean time, I wanted to make sure the engines would not be too onerous of a task at 1:72, so here's the first one: The 1:48 F1 Engine built at 1:72.

That's a good-looking F1 engine there. The Saturn V should make an impressive model even at 1:72, especially with a LUT and crawler. You've set yourself quite a task. This'll be an interesting thread.

The LUT and crawler may or may not end up happening, considering that they are not free kits, but I definitely would like to get them and build them, too. 1:72 remains a good choice of scale "just in case" :D

Honestly, I'd rather build the 1:96 MicroArtWorks version, but I definitely don't have that kind of money available.

And, since the wife isn't too thrilled with the 1:72 version, it'll be happening 'under the table" so to speak - mixed in with other projects, including Ken West's SR-71 and a 1:96@1:300 rocket garden, which will also includew a Saturn V. ADD? what ADD?

I am looking forward to doing it, though. I enjoyed building the engine - everything fit together so well, and the textures look great. I'm not a fan of the laserjet printing, but my home inkjet is broken, and the EduCraft stuff is laser printed anyway, so I want the finish to match.

Not THAT huge... the 1:48 build would be over 8' tall and 8.5" diameter. 1:72 should be just over 5' tall and 5.7" diameter. The MLP and LUT would be a bit bigger, of course - a total of 6'2" tall and 27" x 23", but still not that bad. I might have to find a display case for it, though.

LOL no need to apologize - you're right, it's going to be huge. Just not quite as huge as the 1:48 one

Turns out the original model is about 1:46.5 instead of 1:48 (thanks go to user bdt85 for pointing that out), making my current rescale about 1:70 instead of 1:72. The LUT and crawler are available at 1:70, so this isn't too bad, but now I have to decide whether to continue with 1:70 or start over at 1:72.

In the mean time I've been test-building the escape tower, and it's a lot harder than the engine was! I may have to try thinner paper than is recommended.

The J-2 Engine prototype is complete - and wow, that's a lot harder than the F1. This is at "true" 1:72, now that it was pointed out that the original is 1:46.5, not 1:48. I made the start tank (the white sphere) out of paper instead of trying to find a bead like Greelt suggested in the instructions. It might not look quite as nice, but I prefer a "pure" paper model, as much as possible.

Sorry for the crappy photos, my good camera died so I'm stuck with the cell phone.

I'm not really sure I want to build 6 of these.

Edit: I've been trying to upload some better pics, but I keep getting this error:

"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 19519457 bytes) in /home/papermod/public_html/forum/includes/class_image.php on line 2390"

The F1 Engine is at my office - when I get there tomorrow I'll take some comparison pics. Hopefully I'll be able to post those.
