AXM Falcon 9 landed stage model
Just a reminder for those of you who didn't know it yet, but Alfonso has made a special version of the F9 rocket's first stage. In the download section and on his website too you can find a model of the F9 stage that recently returned to land at the Cape.
Here's a picture Alfonso made of his test build. |

Cool. I saw photos of the landed stage earlier this week and thought, "Gee, that'd make a cool model." I was right....

Very well done, both design and execution.

Ever since his first try I have been hoping he would keep trying till he got it right and now he has. I saw the landed also was just keep my fingers crossed. Beautiful landing. If it were the Olympics I would have given the team a 11 out of 10. Nothing can be perfect. Thank you Paper for the tip on the model. Another one to add to my ever growing list. Wow!!! wc

Last time I saw a rocket landed vertically like that was on a bugs bunny cartoon, I never thought I would see it in reality...Nice job SpaceX!
Downloaded the model and manual and will build it next week. ZAch |

I redid the model a tiny little bit and changed it into 1/300. I'll try and make it next week, as an inbetweenie build next to the N1 I am working on. Might be a nice change from the repetitive and callous cutting of fuel pipe fairings and stage latticework misery.

My turn - F9 1.2 Full Thrust landing 1/300 [1]
So, I have started this one as an inbetweenie. I never did the F9 version with the steering vanes before, the oldest one with the square engine arrangement is in a museum now and the 1.1 version is on my shelves, sporting landing legs but no vanes. Anyway, here is what I have been up to in the time between making stuff for my 1/96 N-1.
Scale is 1/300 and paper is 160 gram/m2. I did a little recolour here and there and joined parts to make the body one long tube. It is just over 16 cm tall. It is very easy to cut and join, up until now, I still have to do the engines, so we'll see if it all works out this well. The base is a wooden square picture frame on which I glued a piece of sand paper. Coloured it with pastel chalks. There is an X in the centre but it will most likely be covered in 'smoke clouds'. |

Some additional photos of the real thing, in case you hadn't seen them:

And there it is!
Well, it took me less time than I thought it would. Here's the result. As expected, Alfonso's F9 is also very well able to be built in 1/300. The only tricky stuff was making the small engines (I smuggled here and made them just single part cones instead of two parters) and the tiniest triangles on the landing legs. But overall the model is a great build.
I used brass rods for the pistons on the legs and fiberfill for the smoke effect on the frame. |
