How appropriate since I guess we're having a close encounter (in astronautical terms). tonight.

Been a while
Sorry for not keeping this thread current - though y'all have been keeping things going with a bunch of really outstanding builds.
Joining the list since the last post here were: Telescopes: Gaia available in the downloads and from the ESA mission website. Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) available at the NASA Goddard mission website. Wide Field Infra-Red Survey Telescope (WFIRST) still getting tweaked. Space Probes: Rosetta and little Philae comet lander available in our downloads. OSIRIS-Rex asteroid sample return probe available in our downloads. Laser Bee asteroid attack satellite still being tweaked with the folks working the concept at the Planetary Society. Built a few Fiddlers Green air racers for the teachers last spring - waiting to see about this year. Still, time to clear the shelves. Think I'll check with the library this time, if I can find some nice mission posters for current missions like New Horizons, Rosetta, and maybe another Hubble (25th anniversary) and Dawn (almost to asteroid Ceres!). They look beautiful! Yeah, spring cleaning can be a pain in the rear- good luck
I would also have a question- I'm about to build the Mars Express probe and wanted to improve the look of the solar panels before printing. Since I'm a terrible texture artist, I took a part of the panels on your OSIRIS-REx model and scaled, tiled & adjusted them to fit the new shape. Is this okay with you? I'm not planning on sharing the model, just asking. |

Ravenchant,
You are welcome to modify any of my models posted here. I put in the restriction on commercial use to keep them as widely available as possible in keeping with my educational excuse - sorry - educational mission for this hobby. Yogi |

BTW - just passed most of the new ones to Jon Leslie so should see them up at Lower Hudson Valley soon.

Cleared the Shelves
Keeping just barely ahead of SHE who does the dusting around here.
Dropped off most everything at the local library for them to rotate into their displays. New Horizons - model and poster, Pluto this summer. Rosetta - Model of orbiter on simple stand and lander with poster, at the comet now. Hubble - on a stand with materials for the 25th anniversary this April. WFIRST - model on a simple stand with graphic as the next Hubble-type (a spy satellite looks up). OSIRIS-Rex - model on a stand with info sheet for 2016 launch, asteroid rendezvous in 2019, and sample return to Earth in 2023. TESS - model with NASA info sheets and posters for 2017 launch of this new planet finder. Resulted in a new project, though. Head librarian asked about a calendar listing important launches, events, etc. to schedule displays. I've got one from 2013 that was at www.unmannedspaceflight.com . Anybody found or created a more recent one? Yogi Last edited by Retired_for_now; 03-14-2015 at 06:13 PM. |

And a little one
Finished up the first iteration on this one:
Half-scale version Full size being attacked by space troll Scheduled to go up later in May riding with the X-37 launch. Latest info (and a trail to all kinds of neat stuff) here - LightSail Readiness Tests Prepare Team for Mission Operations | The Planetary Society - and here - LightSail | The Planetary Society . Sent out to the Planetary Society's outreach/volunteer coordinator for comment, so we'll see how it plays. Yogi |

A very interesting little satellite. So small and yet so huge. That must be a Yogi first, a full-scale satellite. Nice work! Now to work on those deployed sails, although that might not please the space troll's missus...
But apart from that, 'first iteration' means there will be an improved final version? it looks good already. I can see it made with nice metallic and glossy types of paper and some hinges into a good resembling 1:1 model. |

A great idea for the sail part is to use those silver Mylar balloons.

Thanks, on a full scale the sails would cover about two large car parking spaces. Lot's of silver trashbags taped together. You can make a little bitty one with a sail at LightSail-1 Scale Model . An interesting use of materials to make a small scale model.
Next mod is likely to make it a flat-pack model for easy transport to educational events. The solar panels do hinge on simple flaps, but I haven't made a latch mechanism. Making more internal structure to allow actual sail material packing and adding in a few retractable tape measures for the struts is way down the road. Yogi |
