1/16 Scale...Tonino you are a BRAVE model builder. This should end up being a Museum piece. Excellent photos already. Thank you....will follow this with interest.

Thanks my friends, I'm glad to have your attention, but prepare to be patient... I'm afraid this will be a loooong trip! And so little time for hobbies... sigh!
Well, here's my today update on the test build. In the first image you can see the aft side walls with those strange structures simulating part of the many recesses and ledges of the wall. With colors on them they will be somewhat better I think. The walls and aft side consolles was glued in place. The fitting always perfect so far. The two elements that separates aft and front consoles, as you can see, were the first difficult pieces to put on. Their shape is pretty complex and perhaps the parts can be unfolded in a different way. I should think a bit about this. The weakest part is the join with the side consolles, especially in the lower section (see photos taken through rear windows) On the right - especially - I made the worst join. I'm sure it's my fault and not a design issue, but the next time, with the "real" build... I should study something different for that spot. And now a little experiment... I'm sure that all of you know very well the Apollo Command module model by Ken West... with all those tiny switches... I was thinking about something of that stuff for my Shuttle so I made a little try: I used a 0,3 mm wide metal wire to make two little loops and a micro-switch in the center. It was a hell of a work... I don't know if I'll have the force (Jedi style) to repeat this thing for the hundreds of times needed to cover all the panels... For the moment I'll just meditate on it... waiting inspiration... It's all for this session, in the last photo you can see the actual status of my test build. See you soon! |

Although that switch looks fantastic, completing the entire model in that manner may test your sanity. Projects like yours that take time are like savoring a good novel...take all the time you need. This will be a special project. Best of luck. Bravo from Texas.

OK I'm back guys! Just returned from my mountains vacation on italian Alps! Just like past year I took with me my "cardmodeler's travel kit" (see first photo) and, as we had some very rainy days (big thunderstorms, better not go outside!) I had the chance to do some "build work" ... for my wife's joy!
Well, let's go on with the build... The front wall (photo 2) was divided (like other big pieces) in sub-components with "special" tabs realized to join them. This wall, as you'll see after, is a little too weak in this scale. Perhaps would be better to double it. The upper console (photo 3) was divided in 3 slices in the same way. When the 6 pieces were joined in one (photo 4) I realized the fitting is very good (the parts join together at very tight angles but the edges are always perfectly aligned) The dashboard (photo 4) is the most interesting spot (I LOVE dashboards... like many Flight Simulation enthusiast I think!) The two "TAB?" writings were soon disproved... there's no contact with the upper console there (contrary to what I thought). After joining the parts I noticed that the HUD boxes are a little too big: they push back the dashboard (photo 5) . Another point to enhance is the lower side of the console, I'll have to detail it adding the underside wall and the lights. In photos 6 & 7 you see why the tabs in that spot would have been useless... In the front lower part (both sides) is an opening that I will have to close somehow. (more to follow) |

The pedals (photo 1): their basic shape is good for a 1/48 model but I'll have to think to something a little bit more complex.
The ceiling (photo 2) is a really complex piece, but also a great attention-catcher in this model. I'll have to do some work here too. For example, as you see in photos 3 and 4 I found the first real fit issue so far. The upper-lateral walls (both sides) will need some adjustment. The pouches (photo 5) will have to be less "square" In photo 6 you see the appearance of the whole thing in its present state. I didn't glue the front section (it's only placed in position, don't look at the gap between ceiling and front wall...) as I'll have to take some measures inside and I need to reach the inner details easily. In the last photo you see the reason for I talked about reinforcing the front wall (previous post). During the transportation the ceiling section pushed on the windows distorting the frames, as you see here. The transparent pieces will add some rigidity but I think that a double layer of cardboard is needed here. Well it's all for now, next time the seats... |

Wow. That, my friend, is impressive! Big fan. Now who is gonna blow this thing up to Alan Davis-DC-3 dimensions??

Hi guys! I'm back to work after summer vacations! I've just concluded test build of internal structures. In the meantime I've started also the BIG redesign work on the instrument panels, I'll post some preview soon.
Here is what I've done recently. Please excuse the bad quality of those photos. I'm experiencing some kind of (electrical? magnetic? radio?) interference that causes big horizontal bands to appear on the LCD screen and in the actual pictures. I don't know where they are originated... I'm still investigating... The pilot seat is just a rough shape, basically correct but it needs big improvements (and I've just started thinking about it....) The joystick and his base will receive same treatment obviously. The control box behind the seat should not be sitting on the floor but is to be fixed on the lower backside... well, lot of work to do here around... The HUD structure is another piece of work to be redone from scratch. At least lateral mounts. The various switch boxes can be saved cause they are just basic shapes. A good re-texturing will be enough. All the remaining aft details was added. I'll not talk about the joysticks that was good for the little scale but not acceptable in this one. Camera monitors on the right have a strange shape to keep them in the correct angle but that's not their real appearance so will need some redrawing. Other shapes are good (they are only simple boxes, I'll just have to check their dimensions and relative proportions...) In the last photos you see the seat in place. Dimensions seem to be pretty correct except for the Joystick box... Perhaps also the headrest is just a little too "tall and thin"... Next work will be the conversion (enlargement) on the parts needed to build external walls of the front fuselage. This won't be an easy task, I should think about how to cut the parts and let them find a place in A4 pages... See you soon: I'll be back in a flash! |
