1:16 Space Shuttle Flight Deck
Wow, Tonino!
Your detail work is incredible! I really look forward to incoporating some of these into the detailed flight deck of the combined Marscenter/Betexa 1:72 scale Atlantis shuttle card model I am (slowly) building. The color of the light blue Fastex textile ribbons, that is used everywhere on the walls and ceiling inside the shuttles to attatch loose objects, is exactly the right one. I wonder if the pouches in the rear of the flight deck ceiling could have had multiple uses? I suppose the could have been used for the Hasselblad camera 70mm film magazines (up until the Columbia incident), or perhaps smaller still and video cameras, as they are positioned so close to the top and rear windows, where most of the documentary photography took place. Any other suggestions, anyone? In some photos (like in my 2nd photo below, with the nr "3"), they seem to have contained some sort of soft material, they could then possibly also have doubled as soft head bumper protections around the windows - who knows? Keep up the very good work, Tonino! All the best from Stockholm, Bengt Photos from inside the flight deck, the first of astronaut Dr. John Glenn, who recently passed away. The last photo shows one of the (rather bulky) Hasselblad ELS 70mm film magazines: |

1:16 Space Shuttle Flight Deck Laptop
One more thing, Tonino!
I meant to say, but I forgot in my last post; that little card Intel laptop is simply BEAUTIFUL!!! Mindblowing precision. All the best from Bengt in Stockholm |

Thanks all for your nice words.
The shuttle ceiling is going to be a much nicer spot than I expected. And, coming to the seven pouches, I really would be happy to discover their real use. If you noticed in some photos you see there are metal cables coming out from every one of them. Those cables run around the ceiling along white plastic guides and ends in metallic connectors clamped to two distinct white/yellow structures near one of the upper windows. What are those cables? Perhaps only a static charge dispersion device? ... |

A REQUEST...
Anyone has a technical drawing of shuttle seats? I need to figure out the right proportions and shape of seat and backrest. There are many photos showing details of the seats but I'm searching for orthogonal views, front/side, to be acceptably accurate. Seats are an important cabin element. Any help? |

...no feedback about seats... it doesn't matter: I was able to find some good photo showing enough to let me try something.
The first photos shows a rough draft of the seat just to test dimensions and proportions. Looking at those photos I realized I made a mistake: the seat should not be parallel to floor as I made it, but slightly inclined backwards, in the photos it appears to be aligned with central console (that is inclined) so I must correct the shape of the base. in the following images you see the final parts for the seat ready for a more detailed build test. last images show some experiment with aft wall structures and ceiling with fluorescent lamps and one of the seven mysterious pouches. Really after some searching I found some infos about them: they contained cable devices (one for every crew member, hence the numbering) to be used in case of emergency exit throug the upper windows. |
