Thank you all for your nice encouraging words. My work is proceeding slowly but rather constantly. Your appreciation is the best reward to me.
@ Odysseus: I'm afraid that downscaling it to 1:72 would make it pretty difficult to build (and to print). Even so I'm realizing that most of the details I'm putting on won't be visible at the end. And I'm working in 1:16! Anyway there's nothing to prevent trying! I think I'll realize a file with all the panels to share at the end of the work end so all my details won't be lost after all! Someone could even decide to build it in 1:1!!! Well.. here I am with the last batch of shuttle panels. This doesn't mean that the drawing work is over, but it's a considerable achievement. At least I've finished placing switches... on the computer... soon I'll be busy placing them on the actual model. Not sure what's the hardest work In the images you can see the lower section of the aft console. The next details to do will be monitors and screens in the upper aft cockpit and details on ceiling and side walls. See you soon! |

Back again to MFDs
Some time ago, talking about shuttle dashboard with some shuttle experts, I was warned about the fact that in latest missions was adopted a new version of the system software with different MFD screens. This observation drove me to consider redrawing the screens to conform them to the correct look. As this software was first used in STS126 my model, who depicts a later mission, should include the new screens. So, as yesterday the weather here was really bad (snowstorms...) and I was FORCED to pass Sunday at home( ) I decided to redraw all the screens from scratch... In the first photo you can see the general appearance of the cabin with MFDs on. The photo is taken on Endeavour so the screens are exactly the right ones. In the second photo a close-up of a real screen and my copy, on the right. Following other views of the modified dashboard. As you see the screens have different color tones according to what is seen in the photo above mentioned. I think the astronauts turned up and down the BRT command to adjust the brightness of the single MFD to their preferences so it was possible to have some screens darker and others lighter. Tell me what do you think about this feature: do you like it so or the dashboard would be better with uniform colors? Please let me have your feedback about this question. |

I like the appearance of that a lot.. Very realistic looking, in my opinion.

Hi Tonino,
Fantastic work on the graphics so far! I think you have to contact the Nasa and propose they use your panels in their documentation, so flat and ugly in the original. Now it's time to see something in 3d, considering the weather outside. Best, Nando

This week-end I designed some of the aft deck equipments: video monitors and mission timers. I also performed a little test build of those parts as well as the rear joystick base. It's a low res print just to check volumes and fitting.

Tried another unfolding option for the timers, it was too complex to be built square. Here is the new version tested on the first cabin prototype. Next you see a dimensional test for the aft MFD. I realized also a little laptop based on mission photos. Very nice addition (just to relax a little before coming back to design task).
The other images refers to ceiling drawing work. I always wondered what are those 7 rectangular pouches hanging from the ceiling. Anyone knows something about their purpose? |
