Build your own TDRS Model
Just in time for the PR Department and engineers across the TDRS program to get bored with my pleading requests for clarification and details, the ESC Department announced a challenge for kids to build TDRS.
When I first saw it I was going to cry that I got beat out of another design idea. Then I realized the template provided was definitely a lot more kid friendly than my intended audience. So, deep breath, TDRS is shaping up. I'm still laying out the design. the Bus and PVA are complete. I'm designing the PVAs to be sandwiching a single piece of cardboard that will be cross linked through the bus to prevent dramatic sagging. I hope prototyping will bear the plan out. Now I'm laying out the single access antennas and next will be struts. Scale? 1:25 Go big or go home right? We'll see if it comes together. The scale in this picture is definitely off, but I wanted to show it kind of "together." Hope you're looking forward.

I'm so glad that you are going to do this satellite. It was on my list of satellites
to design, but I just can't figure out how to do pattern on the two large dish antennas, so I set it off to the side for a while. I Started designing a lot of famous cubesats for my website. I'm excited about you doing this one and can't wait to see the finished model. Zach. |

Zack, did you ever settle on a pattern for the multi-access array?

No, I really didn't get started on the model. I got as far as making the box for the body, Then swirl patterns on the two dishes got me stomped.

I've managed the Space-Ground Link antenna okay. I was lucky to have a head-on picture and so figured a way to distort the image enough to make the flattened conic fit.
Yeah, the swirls ... I'm chatting in the Designers Helping Designers topics about that now. Wow. Let's hope relearning CAD is the answer, otherwise you guys are going to get a plane white dish and a giant :Good Luck With That: emoji from me. LOL

Obviously needs more work but at 1/25 scale it just prints on A4 on my printer. Letter should be no problem.
Image looks better rotated 90 deg left on your monitor. |

Your Space-Ground Link antenna looks real!
I can tell already that your model will turn out fantastic. |

Thanks Zack! I appreciate the encouragement.
Maurice, that turned out really nice. That design is for the previous 2nd generation satellites. They are slightly, cosmetically different from the 3rd gen that is launching in August. I'd already drawn up some of the details - other than this - and now I'm thinking I'll need to release both! I will be segmenting the Single Access Antenna into three cones to come "close" to the bowl shape of the real thing. With the help of you and Zubie in the other thread I've begun laying out the pattern. More on that later.

Thanks.
Unlike my first doodle this pattern was derived mainly with reference to https://esc.gsfc.nasa.gov/sites/defa...SAC%20Stow.jpg https://esc.gsfc.nasa.gov/sites/defa...be%20table.jpg https://esc.gsfc.nasa.gov/sites/defa...eployments.jpg http://esc.gsfc.nasa.gov/sites/defau...age%20Tent.jpg from https://esc.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.php/...l&name=&page=3 whch show the TRDRS-M. Although looking again at those images and a couple of others I think that the radial elements in http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/a...e-tdrs-ant.pdf should be be reduced to the same width as that of the spiral elements. Having put together a quick sample I certainly agree that at 1/25 three conical sections would definitely give a better representation than one. But how would they be assembled in the absence of thickness or supporting structure? A jig perhaps? |

Scot
I saw the postings on another thread about designing the cones for the antennas and saw your pics on the finished product. I think you nailed it perfectly, great job! I 'm thinking about going to school to learn how to use some 3-D graphics software. |
