Down to Earth: the ZIL 4906

I have put the N1 to the side for the moment, and embarked on something which is not an inbetweenie at all, it has several hundred parts. And something completely different.

This is not a space model pur sang, but it is very much space related and I thought that would be enough reason to put it here instead of at the wheels based subfora.
The ZIL 4906 is a vehicle used at the Soyuz landing and recovery sites. It has two variants, the 'crane' and the 'salon', a vehicle the cosmonauts can recuperate in and in which they are being checked upon. I am going to build the crane variant, because I want to add a returned Soyuz capsule to the build.

The model is made by MaksArt, of which you can find almost all of his models in one thread here. They are little marvels of paper. Up 'til now I have never tried one of his models but when I saw this ZIL I knew I had to do it. I have a weak spot for these huge Russian six and eight wheelers they made over the decades and the Blue Bird, as the ZIL 4906 is known there, is one of them. It has no glue strips or tabs, it needs lots of cardboard reinforced components and the build instructions are limited to a couple of 3D drawings of the model. You really have to look and study every part before glueing or placing it. Some parts need to go in before other parts and not all of it is that clear from the drawings.
So I also have set out to write an at least decent English build instruction for this model. The driver's cabin is the place to start and I must say, it is very very well engineered and detailed. I have not felt the need yet to make my own parts, apart from one tiny little thing.
I am sorry I didn't document the first few steps but I was on a roll and I just kept going and well, before you know it, there already is something of a build on your desk with out proper pictures.
I have made a couple of small mistakes that I luckily easily could correct. A case of RTFM, and I learnt from it.
Anyway, I hope you will enjoy the coming weeks of posts on this unique model.

And some more pictures: Before I closed up the inner shell of the cabin today, I added a few little extras (which I refuse to call scratchbuilds or modifications); a couple of newspapers and a magazine and the driver's backpack. The inner shell will get plastic windows and after that the outer shell goes over the whole construction. Then there will be lots of little thingamajigs on top and on the back of the cabin. That will come later.
This will have to do for now.

PS. On my blog I'll post a little history on the ZIL 4906 tomorrow.
Bye for now!

Most excellent! Have that one since it looked cool and had no idea what it was. Your thread will be of the greatest help.

A little update: I have realised the fitting isn't only precise but also very necessary. The cabin structure became a little torqued when I placed the windscreen or the back of the cabin just a tad offset. (is that correct english? oh well, as long as you all understand.) The outer skin of the cabin was not a good fit because of that. So I cut the part in three smaller parts to make the fitting easier. I still had to cut off some excessive paper. It also left me with very thin forward window frames. It now has been compensated for with the black rubber rims around the windows, so it looks a bit sturdier now (see my next post). I didn't worry a lot about the seam on the top; it would soon be covered completely.

The doors of the Zil 4906 are also on top of the cabin. It is an amhpibious vehicle, so there. The hatches are edge glued and have a very nice fit. Almost all parts need edge colouring, of course.

The head lights were a bit tricky (the instructions don't tell you to punch out the circles to make holes for the reflector cones inside the lamp housings) so I had to do some improvising here. Small circles of plastic were used for the headlight covers. Glued first with PVA, when it was dry, I 'spot welded' the 'glass' to the paper rings with a few tiny drops of CA to keep them well secured in place.

The cabin has some more stuff on top, this part also was an on-the-go finding out what to do to make it fit. I needed to 2 make small cuts in the side of the forward facing part to be able to fold the corners and make the part 3D. These cuts weren't indicated anywhere but logical in the end. This part also covered up the nasty seam and now the cabin part starts to look more and more like the real Zil.

On the last photo you can see two small grey surfaces on the hatch. Here the hinges will be glued and if I am correct, they really work. Makes me curious.
I know it's not my cleanest build but I don't really care. I just do this for the fun and I think in the end I will surprise myself with having built a decent model anyway.
At least, I hope so (-;

Time for an update.
The cabin is almost done, I just need to add the blue flash lights on the cabin's roof, the search lights and the hinges for the windows and hatches. They apparently are able to open and close. In the instructions there isn't a good drawing on how to use the parts for the hinges but I am trying to figure thet out. while I ponder over how to make that work, I started on the frame of chassis, if you will. Lots of small parts, a couple of big ones and again an ingenious way to put them all together into a sturdy construction.
I just spotted one thing which was not correct, at least not for the 'crane' version I am building. The engine cover of the crew cabin Zil, the 49061, has a sloped part to keep an access to the door in the cabin's front. But the 4906 crane doesn't need that and its engine cover even is stepped, I found out looking at the collected pictures in my files. I redesigned the engine cover for the crane and well, this is where I am now.
An almost finished chassis and lots of extra callus on my left index finger from cutting all that reinforced card for the chassis.

Hi friends. Here's an update.

I have a lot to do, especially keeping my head above water, trying to make ends meet. Finally, today I had some time again to do some model stuff.
Because a change in activities can be refreshing, I decided to work on one of the wheels today.
I already had assembled the frame/chassis of the Zil, and I had the cabin, engine cover and the transport deck added to the frame.
I never did a car or a truck before so this is all new and quite the discovery for me. For that reason too, I really wanted to do a wheel.

These wheels actually are little model kits themselves. the wheel alone has 35 parts, and I still have to do the rim. Most enjoyably, the wheel's side walls could be nicely curved into a bulging shape just like real wheels have. And they have protruding treads on the running surface. These treads all had to be added separately, giving the wheel a great appearance but my fingers also some extra callus... (-; But it was enjoyable nevertheless.

I guess most of the pictures speak for themselves, If something is unclear, I can always answer questions about them.

A little further again. Yesterday, I gave the single wheel I had made its rim. It is quite detailed, and looks great. I only had to remove the white strip on the inside of the tire to get the rim inside of the tire. After that it all went on again and there it was.
Today, the side skins were added, the wheel wells were made and well, that was one full sunday afternoon well spent.
I changed the number on the vehicle to one I saw on an original photo of the Zil. Maxim has given this model the same number (14) as the Cabin-carrier and the 'screwy' vehicle which can be carried along at the back of the Zil. They should all have different numbers. Anyway, that was an easy change in Photoshop. Although the first version I printed apparently was a significant lot smaller than the original print. I don't really know what causes this, but I managed to eventually create one that had the same size.
Fit still is exceptionally precise and one really has to take great care in placing each part. On the other hand, there is some margin in certain spaces, because you can round the edges a lot where necessary and that makes ends literally meet where you first had gaps. The only hard place in this part of the build were the inner curves of the wheel wells. But that too went well in the end.
I really am curious on how the bottom parts will go on. The sides on the front have these curved round sections where I guess I will need something to back it up from behind to get the central part and the sides meet up correctly. Let's sleep on that for a couple of days... (-:
