Algebraist, thanks for the detailed fix to the J-2 problem. Also appreciate you documenting it so well. Great build.

The 1:48 scale files, aside from mostly being JPG's also look crudely chopped up with no rhyme or reason even harder to figure out how they go together.

Little confused here, all files uploaded are vector and none jpg, which files are you referencing here so that I can check it out?

Sorry, those are the ones on Lower Hudson Valley Paper Model site. Didn't realize Algebraist was talking about the downloads on this forum.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hello everyone. I think things are getting a little mixed up so just want to clarify. The version of the Saturn V I am building was download for the Lower Hudson Valley Paper Model site. They are all pdf's and are broken down section by section (thrust structure, stage one, interstage etc) along with a pdf of instructions for each section. All the pages for each section are sequentially marked and have the "tinkered with by legal01" logo on them along with the designers copyright. I have just checked the site again and they are still as described. I was looking at the download models section, real space, Apollo era, the penultimate model on the page.

I have also just gone to the downloads section of this forum and downloaded (for the first time) the only things I can see connected with this model which is under real space, manned, Greelt's Saturn V update and had a look at them. They are almost identical to the Lower Hudson valley downloads. The difference is (as far as I can tell quickly looking at them) is there have been some additions of retro rockets to the thrust structure, some additions of some bits to stage 2 of umbilicals and retro rockets and a different cone on the top of stage 2. All of these additions were by the designer Rocky Barrnett. All the files are pdf's. they are listed under legal01 downloads.

Overall I think this means the model will get some nice enhancements, so I am glad I have found out about them.

Just a few to start with.

Hi Mike

Thanks for that. Think I will go for Buzz's first.

Currently I'm finishing up Boris Chertok's four-part seminal history of the Soviet space program from its earliest days through the 70's, "Rockets and People"... each of the volumes is about 400+ pages, so it's not for the faint of heart!

One of the best resources is the "NASA Technical Reports Server" (NTRS). I've downloaded a LOT of the old studies and proposals and stuff on the early space program, particularly WRT the Apollo/Saturn system, and have done (and periodically still do) "study summaries" of them, with respect to the most relevant information for modelers (specifically flying rocket hobbyists but also equally of interest for static models or space history buffs). NASA reports tend to be hundreds of pages of very dry statistics and formulae and I try to condense that down to the most interesting, relevant, and historical subject matter of interest to hobbyists and necessary to create a model and place it in proper historical context...

Check them out if you like... Just look in "Luke's Study" under the "Crew Quarters" section at the bottom of the forum list... Sagitta Cantina - Login

Later! OL J R
Thanks for all the suggestions! Some many interesting things to look at, so little time at the moment. Boris Chertok's book looks fascinating.

For anyone who would like a gentler but realistic insight into the space race can I suggest the 4 part TV series made in 2005 by the BBC (TV company in the UK) called "Space Race". It covers from 1944 to the moon landing of 1969. No spoilers, but let me say you learn who Sergei Korolev is (amongst many other things. I really enjoyed all 4 episodes when they were first broadcast.

Hello legal01

Thanks for the comments. If anyone feels any of my suggested changes are worthwhile I will happily let you know what they are. I would feel more comfortable if other people try them out first and then confirm they are indeed an improvement (to be honest).

I am from iran.unfotunately in my dear country it is toooooooo expencive to print 180 page .So i had to print just 20 pages of Apollo engine..
Dear roham

Your engine looks really good. Keep up the nice work

Thanks for you kind comment.

Sorry printing is a problem for you. Here are two things you could do to cut down on the printing but still have a great (big) model (I think):

First option: In 1969 there were instructions issued to make a 1:48 scale Saturn V out of normal materials (no printing). Here is a link

Ninfinger Saturn V

Second option: Make only the outside of thee rocket and for most of the body use just plain white paper or plain black paper. Read the sizes of the part off the pdf's of greelt's model. You will not have all the printed detail but you can add some of it by hand and it will still be a an awesome model

Just suggestions. Looking forward to seeing more of your model

Kevin

Ooooo (as in the noise the "little green men" make in Toy Story). This is now on my b'day list. (Apologies if the |Toy Story reference is of no meaning to you)

Thanks for the recommendation
