Final bits on stage two

Dear all

I have been considering the last few parts that are for stage 2.

I have decided to leave off these parts since the former are only on the early version of the Saturn (thanks Beno) and I cannot find what the second is supposed to be (which is entirely down to me)

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-q3.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-q2.jpg

I am also omitting the "aft umbilical connection". I just feel with all the other umbilical connections being recessed, this one being stuck on would look very noticeable at this scale. Also it definitely has a "shut off" door (see earlier post) so is only seen when hooked up to the LUT.

Also being left off is the "personnel access door". It does not look like the correct pattern for the one on stage two (from what I can see from the actual pictures) though I may well be wrong about this. I did find a picture of an early Saturn V on which the access door was white and it looked exactly like this part, but on the intersatge 2-3 (which was subsequently painted black on the other Saturn V's.

This just leaves the four telemetry antenna, which I am still in two minds about. I think they run the risk of being "ripped off" when handling the rocket stage. However I will decide when I can next check the actual stage of the rocket, which will be in the new year now.

Just to finally say that my decision to omit these final parts is just a personal feeling and is not a criticism in any way of the design of any of the parts.

Regards

Kevin

Interstage 2-3 continued

Dear all

So the last part of the rocket to complete is the interstage 2-3. To recap from post 532 (over a year ago!) it still needs the sway targets added and the 4 retro rocket motors fairings.

However I also decided to add some internal structure so that the rocket could be safely stacked. So I have been working on this internal structure. I had already done the trig calculations (see below) to work out the length of 8 "vertical" struts and also 2 rings of "ribs" 1/3 and 2/3 of the way up the cone of the interstage.

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13468.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13469.jpg

The struts were made of 3 layers of 3 mm card and the ribs of 2 layers of corrugated card (see post 532 for details)

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc12967.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc12976.jpg

So now onto the new build. Since all of the reinforcement in the real interstage 2-3 is white these struts and ribs needed to be covered in white paper. I decided to use 120 gsm

First I covered the struts, which was straightforward

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13186.jpg

Before covering the ribs, I needed to take into account that each ring of ribs formed a complete circle and so I had to cut off each rib the thickness on one strut. Then I covered a rib. Here are some photos showing the method I used

First one of the flat faces

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13627.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13628.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13629.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13630.jpg

Then the other flat face

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13639.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13640.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13641.jpg

Then two strips to finish off the curved faces

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13642.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13676.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13677.jpg

15 more to do. Here are some photos of them being covered

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13690.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13691.jpg
1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13693.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13694.jpg

And finally finished

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-sdc13696.jpg

So all that remains to finish off the support structure of the interstage 2-3 is to glue the struts and ribs in place. But this will have to be in the new year when I can access the model.

So it is just a few hours before new year for me here, so just to say where ever you are, I really do hope you have peaceful new year.

See you in 2020

Kevin

1/24 stage 2 finished

Dear all

So I have now been able to attach all the self adhesive ferrous paper for the remaining parts on the body of stage 2. After careful looking at the source photos I have decided not to add the four antenna clusters.

So here is what the now finished stage 2 looks like. First a couple of close ups

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-img_0016.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-img_0022.jpg

So here is it all over in the "Four positions" (as on the launch pad numbering), which you can nicely see at the following site https://www.apollomaniacs.com/apollo/sv_s2e.htm

So in position 1, 2, 3 and 4

1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-img_0020.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-img_0021.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-img_0018.jpg 1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)-img_0017.jpg

Sorry the photos are on their side (me and tech!).

Anyway that is stage 2 finished so this just leaves the finishing off of Intersage 2-3 left to complete the model.

Regards

Kevin

Thanks Mike, glad you are enjoying the thread. Any developments on your large flying Saturn V?
