1/24 Apollo/Saturn V (enlarged 1/48 Greelt et al version)

Dear all

I have started to make a 1/24 scale Apollo/Saturn V by enlarging the 1/48 scale Greelt et al version and thought there might be some people interested in following the progress and seeing how it goes (though I may well be wrong about this).

Starting with the F1 engines. Made a 1/48 version first, then scaled up and made a 1/24 version. Seemed to go okay so started the other 4, 1/24 F1 engines. I then realised I might as well make the complete 1/48 model at the same time. Have now completed all F1 engines for both 1/24 and 1/48 models.

I have tried to upload some photos. Apologies if this has not worked. Normally the most advanced tech I use is a pencil. One of the photos is of the 1/24 engines with my tea mug, just to give some idea of size, the other photos have 1/24 and 1/48 engines in them for comparison.

My goodness, you must have a lot of room available to display the completed model. Details look great. By all means, please continue sharing your build.

The detail is is purely down to the fantastic work of Greelt on his F1 engine. Actually in blowing it up to 1/24 it looses none of its look and is physically strong. For the 1/24 model I used the lower range of paper as specified (in gsm) except for the 220-240 range where I used 250gsm.

Yes, well that's the intention. I been reading your thread on your 1/48 build with great interest. If you don't mind I would like to ask your advice when I start getting close to the J-2/Stage 2 part to try and get a good fit with the interstage and the top of the fuel tank of stage 1.

The rocket will be just over 15 ft but the base would raise it up some more.

That is awfully impressive! And at 15-plus feet, that's going to be a mighty dazzling display. And, yes, plenty of us here will be VERY interested in following your build.

Were it me, I'd be tempted to build the basic F-1 outline, ditch the plumbing and cover the engines with batting, as on the flight articles.

If you wanted to go whole-hog, you could get Ken West's 1/12th scale CM, BPC and LES, shrink it....

Wowsers! I remember the 2-story tall Saturn V at the old Visitor Information Center at NASA Lewis Research Center here in Cleveland. It was the last in line in a row of models that got bigger and bigger as you went down the line from left to right. Good luck!
