Ken West's 1/12 Apollo Command Module

This week I picked up again a project that I set aside about a year ago -- Ken West's incredible Apollo CM. Ken's instructions can be a little vague at times, but the fit and detail of his kits are second to none. I built his 1/33 X-15 a few years ago and it's still one of my favorite models, one that always gets mistaken for plastic.

I spent a few evenings this week building the CM's main hatch. The inside portion is finished. I test-built the outside section three times before I figured out the best way to do it. I'll post photos and explanation as I complete what I hope will be the final build of that subassembly.

Ken's build thread (Apollo command module - 1:12) and Billy Leliveld's photos have been really helpful, as has the book Virtual Apollo. My sincere and reverent thanks to Ken and Billy! This is an amazing and enjoyable project.

Now, if I'm really crazy, I could scale Uhu's LEM up to 1/12. (Okay, I'm crazy but I'm that crazy. Building that gem once was enough. Thanks, Uhu!)

Mine is (sadly) still sitting in my computer. The two aspects of the kit that spook me are the heatshield and the guards around all those switches.

Many moons ago, someone said they were going to make a one-piece heatshield available, but I never saw a finished product.

I built the heat shield as designed. It's not pretty but it's really a bookend to the model. I can live with it.

As for the switch guards, I'm working on the main control panel now. I thought about adding the switch guards; I even bought the necessary wire. But when I looked at the panel and all the tiny holes that would have be punched or drilled, I decided to skip it. There is tremendous amount of detail in the cabin. Adding that tiny bit would take hours and hours.

I admire Billy Leliveld for doing but I can live without it.

I have scaled up UHU's lander model to 1:28. This was before Ken's CM. It was a labor of love. Here are some pictures. I am currently working on Ken's 1:12 CM.
May build the lander again at 1:12.
