1:24 Fortezza Orbiter

I work at a University every year we throw a big party to welcome the students back in September, every department goes nuts decorating. Last years theme was Construction as our building is being remodeled. this year it is blastoff, so very space themed. I decided I want to build a big orbiter to decorate our deparment. so Im enlarging the Fortezza shuttle to 1:24. I will probably need to make a wooden frame in it. I am going as easy as possible no Landing Gear cargo bay closed...
so to enlalrge it to 1:24, its basically changing each 8.5x11 page to 12 11x17 pages...

here is the first "page" Nickel for scale...

Wish me luck (at least I have til september to get it done...

Best of luck with the project. And, yeah, at that scale you'll need to beef up the fuselage sides and cargo bay. I even felt the need to do that when I built it in 1/96th scale.

Formers for the forward fuselage would also be helpful in 1/24th, but I don't know of any.

Keep in mind the Fortezza Orbiter has the early tail, so if you're wanting to build Atlantis on any mission from STS-66 onwards, have to alter the tail to include the drag chute housing.

Really looking forward to following this build. I think you will enjoy the "feel" of the big size of this model. Best of luck!

Regards

Good to know I have reproduced the internal structure on 1/8 ply
I am just waiting my turn on the laser cutter.
I will go ahead and take the cross sections from this diagram
to make formers for inside the cockpit.

I am making the Atlantis, cargo bay closed wheels up. (so as simple as possible) I am not worrying at all about making the model accurate. it just has to look good for one day. Its basically a big hallmark centerpiece LOL!

Finally squeezed some time in on the laser cutter
cut these out of .050 cardboard.
turns out they basically need to be 3 thicknesses, these are 2 thicknesses
