I suspect the reason that there are no Essex class models, angled or not, is that they
just have so many anti aircraft guns.
The Yorktown class models coming out now didn't have so many as built
and the later ships don't have many guns at all.

I built the Maly Essex in 1/300 and the guns were not modeled well. I am not blaming
them it is just too difficult. Each one has to be a model in itself with probably a lot
of acid etch to make it happen.
I would love to see an Essex in 1:200 but I have little hope of it happening.
cheers Jim

I've looked at converting a Essex class model (MM) and others but finding good plans showing the hull conversion for the angle deck have escaping me............ there were two basic conversions to the angle deck. Both required major hull modifications, Island mods, addition of steam cats and new elevators, and of course flight deck mods..........

Without good plans to work from its no worth even the attempt making the changes to an existing model or even try and create a new one.............of course my limited design skills also pose a small problem.

Boy I sure miss Barry...:-(
yes need some ship model designers for sure

Thank you all for your input. What are the best reference sources out there in terms of diagrams, photos etc ? Someone must have scale drawings I would think. I am contacting the Hornet museum in Alameda to see if they can be of any help. This is turning into a different project than what I had in mind but I am going to see it through to the best of my ability. Open to any and all ideas, suggestions....

Jim........... doesn't appear to have much on the CVS, and nothing on the CVA mods. Not really sure what a DOCKING PLAN is for the CVS........and the other is just the radio and radar mast............ the hull plans might would work, but they are for STATIONS, not BODY PLANS.

Years ago (After I first joined PM), before it was explained to me about pirated models, I downloaded every thing I could find. When I first saw this thread I remembered downloading a modified Essex Class. After searching the now forbidden archive, I found it. So yes, there is a paper model of the modified Essex Class. It shows the USS Bennington CVA-20 on the cover, but the model is of the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14. This looks to be a hand drawn model, with "Tent shape" baffles inside instead of ribbed formers.
