So you finally officially declared this model a WIP! All that work on the hatch couldn't be classified as a test build, the result is fantastic! You took the right decision! I can't wait to see you working on the panels!!!!

Great looking build so far. Downsized even!

I haven't started mine yet, I plan to go the other way to 130% scale. Have a great place to store one that size.

dhanners, willygoat, Seascape, rmks2000 thank you very much for your kind words and encouragements.

romanmodels, thanks for your appreciation especially because i could admire your incredible craftmanship on the engine of the Firefly: you can smell the the burned oil and gasoline looking at it.

Believe me, after the experience with UHU02's model Endurance, with a bunch of joints edge to edge, i'm prepared to the challenge.

Thanks Tonino, and I know You are waiting my panels, but they will never reach the neatness and accuracy of yours in the shuttle cockpit, mainly because of the scale, ... obviously

Thanks Mike, about the tickness. Here the correct sheet with the red cell with the number I take from the next table at this link

I think You took the numbers from the third file in your signature. If they are correct, I am a bit ticker ( 160 gsm vs 99 gsm ), but the result for the hatch is satisfactory for me, mainly because the tickness of the majority of the parts refers to the cardboard tickness that I defined directly misuring them.
It will be useful in the next steps of this project. Thanks a lot.

I agree with you that the Ken's hatch is a model by it self and at bigger scale you can also improve the rendering by painting the metal parts and the seal on the edge.

Heat Shield

Second test: the heat shield
After the hatch I went ahead with the heat shield, following the sequence suggested by the instructions. Here too I had to figure out where to cut (outside, in the middle, inside the contour line), then how to glue (with or without tabs), and finally whether to start from the outer ring or from the center. After a series of messes and attempts these are my conclusions: internal cut, without tabs but edge on edge and from the outer ring. The pics I think speak for themselves. I'm not particularly satisfied with the final result (a bit dirty and lopsided), but I decided to continue and eventually redo it later, also because it will have to match the upper cone.

Best, Nando

Just a little update.
With the internal ring the heat shield is complete.

The next step is the section 2: the aft compartment.

Best, Nando
