Those decals bring back memories. I remember when they were first released, there was a lot of discussion/debate over whether they were too light. I thought they were, and too monochromatic. They looked particularly wrong on the sides of the forward fuselage. The belly of an Orbiter that has entered the Earth's atmosphere is largely grayish, but has a mottled and streaked appearance that the decals don't do a good job of replicating.

When I built a Columbia using the Revell 1/144th-scal kit, I used the decals, but applied a thin wash of Badger gloss black to darken and streak the HRSI areas to give them a more accurate appearance.

Okay, so now I know why the lines on every page are thicker than they're supposed to be. Inkscape has 2 importing options, one is "internal import" and the other is "Cairo import". Inkscape sets the importing to internal as default. I tried Cairo, and everything seems fine!!

The big problem is... ALL of the files I worked on were corrupted because of the default importing settings... I think this also contributed to a scaling issue, my pages are marginally larger than the original pages. My head is aching.

A new approach!! On a simulation freeware addon site, I found an addon for Orbiter 2010 which brings the whole shuttle fleet to the simulator. The addon includes texture files for the whole fleet, including early Columbia....

Arvydas shared his magnificent work, a realistic model with textures from Orbiter 2010 some time ago, and I started to wonder if I could somehow cut up the textures into pieces and paste it on the model. It somehow works.

I couldn't seem to "warp" the texture, especially on the nose, so I cropped tiny patches of around 9 tiles and arranged them to look curved. This made the file exceed 200MB (I know... A single page...)but I'm sure it would be much much smaller when I convert it to a raster file. Here's some snapshots.

The OMS pods are questionable, but anyway, here's the model so far. I'm going to do some testing pretty soon!!

What do you mean? I think yours is one of the best builds I've seen!!

Let me point out that this is hardly even my own work, I used textures from a simulator mod (Shuttle fleet V4.8 for Orbiter 2010) and pasted them on Arvydas' wonderful textured model of the R. Fortezza kit.

Now, I've built the wing structure and payload bay, and I realized that I barely know the kit. Thankfully, it's a digital model, so I can build it until I get it right. I also had a problem with the printings, the black ink keeps smudging on my fingers, even though I let the prints dry for a whole night. Never had this problem before, probably because of very fine dust covering the sheets. I have no idea.

The wing to forward fuselage joint is incredibly tricky. As expected, I ruined it. I even tried bringing some tabs outside, thinking maybe that'll help, but it didn't.
I've been following Paperkosmonaut's build for some time, and I have no idea how he managed it. I'm going to try building the payload doors next, and then I'll print the whole thing again.
