Marscenter STS-1 Columbia
Hi folks,
Recently, I successfully recieved my dream kit- The Betexa Shuttle Atlantis!!! I've never fully built the Marscenter kit before, which is virtually the same model as the Betexa kit. I wanted to practice, so a few months ago, I started to modify the template to resemble the early space shuttle specs. Now, I think it is impossible for me to do a 100% accurate job on this kit, since it needs more editing than I can handle, so I am just going to make the model look more or less like the shuttle Columbia from 1981. I started off by completely redrawing the cockpit windows. I traced some decals a few years ago, so I started there. Next was the crazy part- The tiles. Photos show the forward fuselage completely covered in tiles. I did a messy and inconsistent job, but I hope it will look okay to some. I admit it, I rarely focus on one project, so this may take a while..... A lot of models tempt me now and then. But please do stay tuned for updates on this project...

The MARS Center Orbiter can be built into a great model, but it takes work. But that’s why we chose this hobby in the first place....

A few photos of my build from way back. I resized the model from 1/100th to 1/96th and scratchbuilt the ET and SRBs.
There are some errors in the MARS Center model. The biggest, as far as I was concerned, is that the HRSI tile pattern on the belly, wings and elevens goes in one direction. In reality, the tiles go in one direction up to the Orbiter centerline, then the other side is a mirror image. (In the acoustic guitar world, we would refer to it as "bookmatched.") I dealt with that by printing two copies of the bottom, wings and elevons -- one normal and one reversed. Then I had to cut them and join them. The streaking and discoloration on the belly was achieved with pastel chalks. I also used textured paper to replicate the FRSI blankets, but if you're doing Columbia from '81, you don't have to worry about that. Good luck! Last edited by dhanners; 12-12-2019 at 09:09 PM. |

Ah yes, I've seen that amazing build!!! I think yours is the best build I've seen on the internet.
The belly tiles aren't mirrored on the Betexa kit, too... Which is a bit disappointing, but I still love it. Today I did some more work, I added the tile pattern on the payload doors and the sides. A few more details, then I'm going to move on to the smaller parts.

So... I'm having trouble with the page with the umbilical plate, I need to delete every part except for the aft fuselage box in order to do anything... Inkscape goes crazy with big files!!
The problem is, I can't ungroup the page.. So I can't delete big chunks at a time. I'm going to try rasterizing the page and colour the plate gold... Anyway, here are all of the pages I've worked on so far. Page 5 also has an issue, I couldn't lower some black tile patterns below the tile lines, because every single line was on a different layer.... https://1drv.ms/f/s!AhphP0Wy3OYZlFju7ALWsuCb2rc7

I'm not quite sure what linepattern you are referring to...
---- Now, once I had a few test sheets printed out, I noticed a problem on the wings. I think after I imported the page in Inkscape, the lines on the belly became more dramatic... The picture doesn't do any good, but there is a massive difference, and the patterns will not match. I will have to find a way to match the parts properly. I tested the first page, and I think the front windows may need some editing. Perhaps bringing them a tiny bit closer will work... What do you folks think? Please excuse the large gap on the nose...

It would be close enough for me, but I agree that it probably should be narrower
