X-15 Model

Hello all...

I may be mistaken, but did a designer like Ken West or possibly someone else produce a card model X-15 ? I have his XB-70 and would like to show the X-15 along with other X-Planes with the Great White Bird.

Thanks in advance..

Bob

You are right, Ken West did make an excellent X-15. Billy Leliveld did a very nice build of it. The model originally was for sale on Ecard, but I am not sure whether it is back up again. And Ken himself is from the radar...

[edit] Ha, Rick just beat me to it! (-:

I built Ken's X-15 several years ago. It's a great kit--lots of detail, excellent fit and finish, and it make an impressive display model.

I can put the X-15 into the queue to be listed sometime within the next week or two. Heck, I may as well just get all his models listed since not many are left.

It is a great kit, well-detailed and a good platform for super-detailing if you want to go that route.

I built it as the X-15A-2, then build another one, converting it into the pre-stretch version. Ken's model comes in 1/32nd, but I shrunk mine to 1/48th. Both have added detail.

Dhanners, nicely done. I built mine with an open cockpit, since the kit provides some nice detail there. The ladder was a freebie from somewhere, modified to fit the X-15.

Mine is 1/32 and the artwork is hi-res; I think it could be scaled up to 1/24 or even 1/16 without noticeable pixilation. That would allow for some serious detailing.

I think I just added another project to my To-Do List. Ouch.

Thanks for the kind words, and right back atcha.... The ladder is a nice addition to your fine craftsmanship.

I chose to build my X-15s in flight because I always thought that's how the X-15 looked best. Also, the stretched A-2 never really appealed to me; the changes kind of ruined the vehicle's aesthetics, in my opinion. (That said, the all-white version that set the speed record would be a cool model.)

I had longed for a good card model of the pre-stretch X-15, preferably in rollout or early markings. I corresponded with Ken as he was designing and building his X-15, and he said he planned to do the shorter version at some point. He never got around to it before dropping out of sight.

In our correspondence, he was adamant that his model couldn't be modified into the earlier version; the two versions were just too different, he said. But after building the A-2, I was convinced he didn't have enough faith in his own model. (Plus, frankly, I took his warning about the inability to do a conversion as a challenge....) It required some careful planning, cutting and scratchbuilding, but I was pleased with the results and built what I felt was an accurate X-15.

I lack any recoloring skills (or the software to do it) but I would still love a model on the first X-15, 66670, in rollout markings. Over the course of lives of the three X-15s, they carried a variety of markings mainly on the tail and wings) as well as various test patches of paint and ablative coatings, and it would be cool to see someone offer some of those as choices.
