The very first X-15....
I need to build a proper base, but here are some shots hot off the workbench….
Many of us probably have that “holy grail” model that we’ve always wanted to build but never could. Either no kit existed or the markings weren’t available or whatever. For me, that card model has been X-15-1, 66670, in its rollout and first-flight markings in mid-1959. Yukonjohn came to the rescue with a repaint (and accurization) of Henry Yuen’s X-15 that’s in the download section, and he did a wonderful job. When it was unveiled to the public, 66670 had a nose boom and the plainest of markings — aside from warning placards, the fuselage carried just the national insignia and “U.S. AIR FORCE,” but in different positions than they would be later. The upper vertical stabilizer carried only the serial number and did not yet have the yellow NASA banner. The wings carried the national insignia and “USAF” and “NO STEP” markings. The vehicle was painted in a semi-gloss black that had a bluish tint. Yukonjohn resized the model from 1/87 to 1/72 and incorporated the correct markings. He also lengthened the rear fuselage as appropriate for the XLR-11 motors. He corrected the attitude thrusters on the nose; the model has them at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and they should be at 11, 2, 5 and 8. He added the four bug-eye camera housings. I scratchbuilt the XLR-11 motors and added details to the vertical stabilizers. I also scratchbuilt the antennas and air data probe. It's nice to finally add this one to the collection…. Nicely done. And fun to see someone else doing the rubber band pliers thing.

Where could one find this model with these changes? Are there more to come with different markings?
Thanks, this is a great mode to see. |

I'm unsure of whether the models can be released. Will check on the propriety of that.

Henry is active on the forum, he was last online on the 13th, so a PM to him would be the best way to proceed

Thanks. It would be up to Henry and Yukonjohn. I'm just the builder....

Fashioned stands for the trio out of stuff I found at a stationery store. Looks better than my pair of pliers and the rubber band....
