X-15-1, in 1/48th scale....

This is becoming My Summer of the X-15. My sixth (!?!) X-15 build of the past couple of months is of Yukonjohn's repaint of Henry Yuen's X-15-1, 66670, in its rollout/first flight scheme in mid-1959.

While my other builds have been 1/72nd scale, I enlarged this one to 1/48th. The build was relatively straightforward, but I added a lot of scratchbuilt detail, including the XLR-11 engines, and separated the top and bottom rudders from the vertical stabilizers. In real life, you can see daylight between the stabilizer and rudder, and it would be noticeable in 1/48th, too. I figured that despite the additional work (and it was a bear...) it was a detail I should add.

It meant cutting apart the stabilizers and rudders and building each as its own structure. I also shrunk the pieces from the Ken West X-15's speed brakes to add detail. (Similarly, I used Ken's landing skids.)

I want to thank Henry and Yukonjohn again for offering this model.

dhanners, great build. Do you think it would be possible for a build thread on these great little models? I'm sure it would be interesting to see how you make these master pieceses.

Thanks. I might have one more X-15 build up my sleeve and could take photos as I go. I only deviate from the instructions in a few areas, but they are kind of significant changes, so I guess I could explain that process.

I would be very interested in seeing how one of these models go together.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to see this?

Love it. I downloaded these and I'm doing a recolor for myself in 1/96 scale.
