David,
Thank you for the build photos and the build thread details. I'm sure this one will be a great as the other models that you did. Gary

Hi David,
Thanks for sharing your techniques, makes everything a lot clearer now. Inspired by your recolours, I have redone '71 in the pink undercoat scheme. Hopefully I should be able to upload here soon. Unless you are doing one your self of course. All the best Bernie

Decided that my black X-15A-2 was looking kind of bare, so I decided to add the auxiliary fuel tanks. The tanks were jettisoned at Mach 2, and parachuted back to the ground. There were five different color schemes for the tank pairs, and the pair depicted here are in one of two schemes carried by the X-15A-2 when it wore the orange ablative paint.
This was the ultimate low-tech build. I used Ken West's tanks and shrunk them to 1/72nd scale, then replicated the parts with cardstock, orange paper and silver paper. Markings were masked and painted on with a paint marker. |

Those tanks definitely needed to be there. Nicely done!

Awesome! The A2 always looks a little more awkward because of its length, I think. These tanks solve that problem. It gets bulkier but also more in proportion. I love the looks. And the way you made them. Great work, Dave!

I've reading this X-15 series builds and was learning a lot about the X-15. I'm doing some BUFFS (B-52's) which was the Mother Ship for the X-15. so, here is the question: Where can I found Ken West's external fuel tanks for the X-15 A-2 version? Thanks in advance, Regards and surprise us with yet another X-15!!!
