New Horizons and Atlas V 551
The last model of 2021 and the first of 2022.
There are several very nice examples of the NASA New Horizon's Space craft available in a variety of detail and skill levels. And some very masterful self-design versions. I selected Zack's version and rescaled it to 1:25. It was a good build and I can tell that he spent a lot of time matching photos of the actual craft rather than the many 3D renders. I also liked that he included the foil covering for the RTG, and it fit so well, that I decided not to glue it so I could show off features otherwise hidden. One thing I haven't yet added was the engine bell. I need to decide how I will display it before adding that final detail.

Joining New Horizons and adding to my growing rocket garden is AXM's Atlas V launch vehicle. I really like how he has designed this rocket in both 96th and 144th scale versions. I built the 144th version with a few added details to the solid rocket motors. I also tried to include magnets to make the boosters removable, but getting the alignment and strength right was past my skill at this point. I'll have to try again next time. Reference photos showed the inner engine bells to be black so I just painted the common core engines this time, but I did use black paper inserts for the solid motors. I like the affect. Unfortunately, I made the fuel line a bit too large and so the upper cover and lower connections didn't line up I think the way they were meant too. I should have dry fitted and then just reprinted and tried again. Showing impatience in my old age.
Hope you've enjoyed the pics.

Well done. I have a few satellite and rocket kits that I should move up in the pile after seeing your work.

Thanks guys. I’m not always as detailed as I could be, but it’s been fun branching out into rockets.
