Youtube Saturn 1B Build Thread
Hello Everybody,
Decided to try a build thread by taking short videos of the build. Yesterday the Stomp Launcher version of the Saturn 1B was redone to fix a couple of problems and this build thread is the result of taking 50+ short (1-minute or less) videos. Curious how it would be to use movies instead of text/drawings for a build thread. What do you think? Had to work fast to show some of the steps. Hands were sweaty for some reason. Glue got eveywhere... Digital Camera was used. It has a video capability, no sound, not high very quality! Camera used was set on tripod viewing general construction area. Start & Stop was performed by the builder, no assistant. Each post will include short note on what to do. Then the video showing how I did it. 26-videos total. Best regards, Mike Bauer Saturn 1B Launch Video Showing completed model & Stomp Launcher available in the download section here or at The Lower Hudson Valley Paper Model E-Gift Shop - Chronological Model List |

Step One.
Caution: Xacto or any round handle Knife will roll off of the table! It will stick in your foot/leg! In the videos, notice the taped piece of folded cardstock to the handle. This will stop the rolling. Stomp launcher Saturn 1B Build Thread: Tools Needed: *Work Area *Cutting Mat *Knife or Scissors *Straight edge of some type (Rulers work great) *Embossing Tool of some kind. Back edge of a Table Knife (Butter) will work. *White PVA Glue (Elmer’s Craft Bond All Purpose works great) *Some kind of device to apply glue (ink refill syringe, toothpick, paint brush) Optional Tools Used When Rolling Tubes: *1/4”, 3/8” & 5/8”Dia x 3foot Long Wood Dowel * Double Sided Tape (permanent-thin width) When constructing Paper models there are a couple of things that can make it much easier. 1) You need to preshape the part. In the case of the fuselage (tube) it is best to pre-roll and then wrap with a rubberband. Let it set on the work table out of the way. Leave it wrapped until ready to glue it. {I use a short piece of the conduit to roll/wrap nsupport, wood dowel works just as well} [Throughout the videos notice that all parts are shaped before gluing] 2) Small parts are easier to complete the scoring/crease lines for the fold when still attached to the main sheet. 3) Don’t use too much glue. Glue should be the final seal, the part will not work right if you use glue to make it hold the new shape! {I use an ink refill syringe as shown in the short videos} 4) Press hard and hold, to seal the glue joint!! 5) The Black or Grey Outlines are cut Lines for the part. Just trace the outer line with a knife or scissors, to remove the part from the main sheet. 6) All Dotted Lines (inside the part) are cut lines. Don’t cut until the part is ready to be used or told to do so. You don’t want to cut them until the part is glued to its final shape or the part will be mis-shaped.. 7) All Dashed Lines are fold lines, they need to be scored before folding the part. This ensures a good crisp fold. 8) Sometimes it helps to visualize the part before shaping/gluing. 9) Dry fit all parts before gluing. 1st Video: Use emosser and score Dashed Fold Lines. |

M,
Great idea to do videos...this should help people understand how "easy" it is to build paper/card models. Thank you for posting. |

Nice idea. If you ever get a chance to watch ModelManTom on YouTUBE. He does complete plastic model builds. I am sure it would work just fine for paper modeling too.
We're those your hands or did you get a stunt double for the cutting parts. :D Thanks for sharing. Cheers Jim |

Thanks for the comments!
Was wondering how they would be perceived. More fun doing videos than writing a bunch of text with pictures. More videos soon, still going thru them to see which ones to use. Mike |

Ok, Time to make the Fuselage and Internal PSI Tube.
Video shows a 5/8" Wood Dowel that has rings/bands of double sided tape about 2" apart. Tape holds the cardstock in position allowing easy gluing. Internal PSI Tube is done the same way. How To "pop" the cardstock tube Free from Tape Video: |

Time to Finish making the Internal PSI Tube. Glue needs to be completey dry before installing into the Fuselage Shell, so now is the time to make it. Once complete, set aside to dry for at least 1-hour.
Notice the use of the 1/2" Conduit for support of the PSI Tube during construction. Cut a strip of scrap cardstock as shown in the next video. Glue the strips making a " + " out of the strips on top of the plug just installed. Finally Glue a strip of scrap cardstock around the ends as shown. Last edited by mbauer; 05-30-2010 at 02:34 AM. Reason: Forgot to mention the conduit tubing. |

Ok, Time to glue the Fuselage Former piece to the Plugged End of the PSI Tube.
Glue the center of the disc inside the circle on the PSI Tube End Plug to Fuselage Former as shown. After Former is glued, do a Glue "Fillet" as shown. Cut Out the center hole on the Bottom Fuselage Former. Once cut glue the former to the open end of the PSI Tube as shown. Set aside to dry! |
