finishing the frames
i used brass tubing as axels
again you can see the need to "fill" the edges to smooth them checking against some other pieces in the model i realize i have made the frames a little too thin the resulting edges were a lot of work, but i like the way they look |

assembling the frame
i used foamcore to build a jig for the frame
the first of many bolt heads begin to appear |

more frame
now the pieces that the springs will mount on are attached
and the piece that will hold the cylinders at the front in the last picture you can see my circle cutting method, a lot of snips with a scissors round the edge resulting in a many sided polygon, but the look like circles and work like circles |

the cylinder frame
i often add additional support pieces to keep sides from bowing in
this is the pivot pin that the front truck will mount on checking to get a piece the right thickness, sometimes the card is the right thickness, sometimes you have to "peel" away a layer and sand a little to get the thickness you need |

the cab floor
first a view of the back of the frame, showing the hitch where the tender will be hooked up
then the cab floor is glued on then a jig for building the front truck then the pieces for the inner frame of the boiler and the inner frame glued up |

the boiler
mounting the boiler in the frame to make sure it will fit and to be able to mount the spring mounting plates that go on either side of it
the jig was for this, not for the trucks, after painting i lost the reference marks for centering the spring mounting plates, so the jig lets me make sure they are centered on both sides |

Amazing work. I am continually amazed at the vast number of paper model kits that exist from all over the work. Looking forward to the rest of your build.

the springs
i love paper springs
they're so... springy bamboo pins to anchor them if you built this with the axles free the suspension would actually work |

photo resource
i went to the sacramento rail museum and found they have a train there that is built exactly like this model, although it is painted differently
here are a few pictures I took about 300 pictures, in great detail, they have mirrors all around and below the train (and above) so it was possible to get almost all the details except inside the cab i'll post a link when i get all the pictures up on the web |
