Time out a second. I'm getting mixed signals here. I have downloaded Dave's P51 Mustang and am not too far from beginning. I have been reading and studying like crazy to figure out how to put the thing together without a bunch of straggly paper hanging off of it. So far I have seen paper models smoothed out with sheetrock mud, plaster, glue and various fills brushed, sprayed and smeared on with putty knives. All to the end of a very smooth (seam free) slick model. I thought the train build was absolutely, knockout beautiful but now find it is somehow disqualified from the rhelm of "true paper building" because he has achieved what nearly everyone else is trying to achieve. By this recononing the beautiful scratch built sailing ship would have to be diqualifed because of the use of adhesive foils for the "wood" instead of paper and the use of moldable clay for the various decorations. So, in the future I will only consider ALL paper only builds to the total exclusion of builds that use anything other than paper? Is this correct?

Think of the paper model as the canvas of a painting. Without it, you can't paint. Using paper only is just a choice of the builder.

On another note, I'm building Julius' X-mass train scaled to fit A3 paper.

Without mixed media and/or putty and paint, most of my models would be an ugly glue-smudged mess.

Without paper, I would have no models.

Don't let the purists get you down, each to his own, a model is a model no matter what it's made of, if you are happy and proud of the result, who really cares how you got there?

You will find it here: Christmas Train Paper Model
Go top the very bottom of the page, and click on Christmas Train Paper Model template
Be warned: my HP laser printer made the colours much less bright than in the pictures on screen. I think these designers should take that into account...

As far as whats paper model art and whats not........That is a beautiful model engine! Theres NOT NEARLY ENOUGH presented here to start disqualifying some either! Then again, this isnt a contest, unless your the type that believes everythings a contest? Mixed media is wonderfull, especially when those are the results........but its still NOT ALL PAPER! A large percentage of models presented on this web site are not! As far as the Polar express model, i would love to have one, but not in a size that causes blindness trying to build it! LOL!!!

haha you got it Bob!

This "discussion" has happened many times, and its one of those things
that will always be argued. (But hopefully with a little tongue in cheek and
a little tolerance for those who persisit in destroying the art of paper
modeling with the use of putty, paint and other non essential items....
oh sorry, did I get started again?)

OhioMike is almost right, this is not a competition...unless someone beats me
to the finish and then I will have to criticise their methods until you all agree
I am right.

sorry....again....

We, as paper modelers, still take part in judged competitions for scale
models...so you can't completely exclude the "competition" part.

bottomline is....Some people don't care, and others (like myself) have
a strong view about "pure" paper models...I really love to see a model
that is 100% paper (forgiving the use of glues and a small amount of
non-paper items where absolutely necessary eg plastic canopies, wire, etc)

I think that for definition purposes, and definitely for the purposes of
judging in a scale model event, you have to clarify the differentce between
a "paper" model and a "mixed medium" model.
Thats all.

If you haven't see Kooklik's Big Boy locomotive, try to find the threads.
A master paper builder who takes advantage of other mediums to give his
Locomotive an unbelievably realistically look!

all paper replika models have the same password
and it is shown with every model download link.

One of my favorite sites!! Nicely laid out...models are easy to find
and download. Usually plenty of detailed assembly disagrams.
And a great selection of models!
