Micromodels locos
Hi to All, here are some recent railway subjects to follow up on the Queen Elizabeth model I've just submitted.
Over the years I've determined that the kits need modifying quite a lot, in keeping with the spirit of the very high minded instructions given on the wrappers. I never use the chassis components - not only is the width wrong (if you calculate the scale - usually, though not always, 1:200 - the width needs to be fractionally over 7mm for 4ft. 8.5 inches gauge) but it seems impossible to avoid twisting; I just stick the sides to either card built up to the correct width or stripwood trimmed down. I now always build the wheels up with cut out spokes after drawing them up on the computer; the inner circle within the wheel rim is cut out and the spaces between the spokes removed, then the spokes are glued back in and the wheel cut to shape. The recommended scribed perspex option really doesn't work in my opinion. Similarly, the motion is built up in separate parts; the 9mm gauge of the kits was obviously to disguise the lack of built up wheels and motion if the models are built as designed. The Beyer Garratt isn't quite finished - on this, the valve gear and wheels are sorely taxing my patience and progress is slow! Chris 190 |

Thankyou for sharing, so much patience must be required when cutting out these small parts.
