Christmas Train from Paper Replika
.. is still not done!!! i thought this would be an easy model and i'd be done in couple of weeks - ha!
anyway, here's the source so far i got this, it took way too much time: with fiddling, edge-painting .. i must be doing something wrong .. maybe there's a secret technique? my previous build of Ton's model had similar shapes but there he specifically provided the strips of paper that would go in the 'rim' stopping the 'disk' from falling inside. i used this technique here too but the results aren't good. seems like i won't be done by Christmas with this one .. i got more wheels which are even thinner, so if you have an idea or a link to a tutorial, please, share |

on wheels like this, I make the wheels solid by stacking disks of cardboard until built up to the needed thickness, then cover the wheel with the printed card parts. It's not like we need to shave off every possible milligram of weight to increase flight duration.

On the model T wheels on a piece I did for one of my agents for Christmas, I just edge painted the cardboard that I used to build up the thickness. I'm not sure of the size of your wheels, but I imagine that would work. After all you will have the fiddly bits in front of the wheels which will be under the bulk of the engine itself.

Looks like the same train from PR in 2008. I could be wrong!

It IS. Date on the page is 05 Dec 2008
Still a Great model subject. I think I will add flanges to the wheels if/when I build though. Want it to stay on the rails!!!!

Looks like you are building it at normal size. Try building it when printed on A3 size paper, you'll get something like this:
And I don't think I'll make it to Christmass either... (I used stacked disks of cardboard too, on ALL the wheels. Julius tends to make some odd design choices, but his models are sweet.) One final notice, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT cut off the sides of the main cabin roof, as it makes it only harder to assemble.

yeah, i thought about stacking but that seemed inefficient .. also, how do you know how much to stack and what if the card thickness doesnt add up to required rim width?

On the car I did, I had to add one extra layer of cardstock to get close ...

I simply eyeballed it, as I am bad at math. But I did measure the card's thickness before starting, then just guessed how many layers were needed (and getting it wrong too!).
