Clever Models' Gorre Water Tower

Built this in HO scale over the past few evenings. I tweaked with the design a little with the GIMP -- adding the Gorre & Daphetid logo to the tank, and slightly enlarging the roof to get a better fit.

I also added some hyper-detailing by printing vintage advertising posters on cigarette paper, then gluing them on with just the corners left unglued so they would look like they were peeling up a bit with age.

Wow, very nice! Clever Models makes a great looking kit, I like the extras you've added, and the nod to John Allen was a nice touch.

Great-looking model! Reminds me of John Allen's models too.

Looking very good. The added detail with the corners of the adverts is a nice touch.

This model sure brought back memories. In 1969-70, while I was a student at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, I operated the Andrews Branch of the Gorre & Daphetid during the weekly operating sessions. What a wonderful time that was.

Excellent model!

Don

Dear ridetheory:
Nice model, how did you print on Cig Paper? I thought it comes in small packs like 2 by 3 inches How do you put it through the printer?
Thanks,
Miles

I'm going to have to make a how-to video about this, but the short answer is: first I print on 8-1/2" x 11" card stock and stick the cigarette paper over the printed image, with the gummed edge toward the top of the printout. Then, using that larger sheet as a carrier, I run it through again. If the cigarette paper gets crumpled by the print head, I try again after taping down all the edges with Scotch tape.

It's a pretty slick trick for making flags, too. If the cigarette paper is thin enough, the ink soaks all the way through. The image is just a wee bit lighter on the back back of the cigarette paper. Oddly, it doesn't bleed noticeably, and the image retains a lot of detail.

You can also use this trick to print on sticky notes.

Wow! I'm jealous.

I only recently learned about John Allen, and I've really been enjoying his whimsical designs.
