Ahhh - now that I know what to look for, I've managed to find a suitable prototype picture:

Actually, they look to me more like (wooden?) buffers than plates. And on later containers (this one, e.g.) they seem to be made of rubber...
Anyway, cardboard is the material of choice, no doubt about that!

...just bought the last of the GCS2 sets, so this set isn't listed on ebay currently. I.e., if anyone is in need of one, you have to nudge Robin!
