Just as a thought about modeling in a smaller scale than this. I used to know a 3mm society member who used to draw with a ball point pen on the inside of coach sides to give the moulding relief on the outside rather than cut an extra layer. It was surprisingly effective when combined with a subtle change of paint colour and deceived the eye completely.

If you are OK with CAD then a Cameo Sihouette card cutter is great for windows. As for the acetate for windows I used the double sided tape sold in card craft shops and it worked pretty well. No spreading mess.
