Flying Scotsman
This is my first attempt at a "proper" train and I could be shot for introducing this sort of model !!!
I had thought about making the much more advanced kit but with no experience I decided to aim a little lower. I found this kit in a local shop that specialises in almost toy kits, although some are very complicated, advertising no glue or tools needed. Generally these comments are miles from the mark and parts will not hold together without glue. Their website is https://www.whirligigtoys.co.uk/ if you are interested. However, I did see a "3D model Puzzle" that interested me. They had a made up version of The Flying Scotsman that looked as if it had possibilities. As with most 3D puzzles this kit has many slots and tabs so my aim was to reduce their size and try to hide them as much as possible. So, here it is. It is about 20 inches long and the base makes it a little longer. It took much longer than the 3 -4 hours mentioned on the box - but still a lot shorter than the "proper card model". It's obviously not as detailed but it still has quite a presence. For the real enthusiasts, there is more bad news ,,,,,, I've just bought Mallard by the same publishers! (Cheatwell) Cheers Mike |

A charming model, and more than passable I would say.

Not bad at all for something sold as a 3D Puzzle, Mike
The Flying Scotsman is a very appealing subject, too... |

I like it!
It definitely gives the appearance of the actual locomotive and has a charm in and of itself. I look forward to seeing the Mallard. Don |

Nice. But I agree with Mike himself: these 'puzzles' do not belong on this site. 'Off with their heads!'

I will allow these types of models to be talked about, as it is a great introduction for kids, or adults who want to get into the hobby

Hi All,
And hi, Mike Stamper. You've made a nice, clean build of your Flying Scotsman. Don't worry about being shot for your efforts, the ladies and gentlemen around here rarely resort to gun play. Crossbows, sometimes... I agree that these types of puzzle-models have a place in this site. Those of us who cut our teeth during the last century building German or Polish or Czech paper models without English instructions know all too well the "puzzle" aspect of those old models. Do I see a misregistration of the cutting die in the wheels in the pilot truck? I believe it even shows up on the photograph on the model's cover. That's the price we pay for die-cut parts. Quite a few of the Vintage Models I build were originally die-cut, but the modern scans make it easy to ignore the shadows of the die. I'd rather make my own mistakes with my knife and scissors than curse the guy who made the cutting die. But, to each his own, and I agree that large, colorful models such as these can be a great introduction to our hobby, as well as a satisfying build for the experienced paper modeler. Looking forward to your A4 Pacific Mallard. Score and fold, Thumb Dog |

Thanks for all the comments - I'm sure Diderick is joking - I hope!
The cutting registration is not the best - the wheels especially. I wanted to make the train after seeing the earlier thread, but I knew that it was likely that I would never finish it, so when I found the 3D version I thought it would be interesting to see if I could make a decent version without all the tabs showing. I've just remembered - the first 3D puzzle I made was "The Church on the Spilled Blood" in St. Petersburg, although looking at the model it's almost impossible to think it was a "no cutting/gluing" kit. But beware, some of these 3D puzzles are truly awful - I know - I've made some!! |

Looks good even with the usual registration mistakes from the die-cutting.
I have an R2-D2 and a Tardis interior model that are die-cut and have those slots and tabs used for contruction. Both are waiting to be started.
