10 Ton Goods Van- Basic Body

On with the start of the build.

There are a total of 22 parts for this wagon.

Picture 1 – The parts cut out. Notice the different axle box and wheel assemblies compared to the coal and low sided wagons.

Picture 2 – The first part to build is the actual van body. This shows the insert and the parts cut out and folded.

Picture 3 – To keep the parts square I constantly use the small engineers square I have, inserting this inside the part and then aligning the sides around it while the glue is wet.

Picture 4 – Assembly in progress.

Picture 5 – The two parts assembled together, with the roof alongside. The latter was pre-shaped by forming it around some dowel

Picture 6 – The assembled basic body. There are still more parts to add to the outside of the body before the chassis goes on.

It is. Goods handing was"advanced" back then, with most small depots having cranes.

Some goods vans had sliding partitions so smaller loads could be segregated, or separated and secured.

They even used to run container wagons with container (open and closed) traffic - the containers were then (as today) transferred to trucks or wagons for delivery to their destinations.

I am constantly surprised as I discover how the railways then operated and what they did!

Excellent goods van, Kevin, and pukka gen on pre-grouping goods handling.

I think this pretty wagon is roughly equivalent to the late 19th/early 20th century American 36-foot wood-sheathed box cars in purpose and location in time, if not in size and capacity.

Thanks, Don and romanmodels.

Don - interesting comment re the wagon similarities. Probably the case, with functionality ruling the day.

On a similar theme, I have actually found a book on the history of the (freight) container and have got it on Kindle. About to start reading it soon.

---------------------

Bit of a slowdown on the modelling at the moment - we are having daily endless power failures/outages here and have at stages not had power for 24 hrs at a stretch. This plays havoc with modelling (no bright modelling lamp) - but I have been chugging ahead - slowly!

10 Ton Goods Van - Finishing Off

Well, managed to make some more progress...

As I mentioned in the last thread, still a few parts (19) to add:
  • Roof hatch or door x 1
  • Roof braces x 2
  • Wheels x 2
  • Axle boxes x 2
  • Axles x 2
  • End stanchions x 2
  • Buffer posts x 4
  • Buffers x 4
By far the most fiddly things to get right are the stanchions - they are so small it easy to not cut the sides parallel - and any mistake here really shows for some reason.

Picture 1 - The body, with the roof door and 2 roof braces added.

Picture 2 - The wheels, axles and axles boxes added.

Picture 3 - Next buffer posts. You can see the overlap from the roof door here.

Picture 4 - End stanchions (the triangular pieces on the van ends) and buffers in place and painted.

Pictures 5 & 6 - Finished goods wagon.

Picture 7 & 8 - All the finished wagons to date.

Thanks Don.

Looks like I am half way there - 3 bits of rolling stock done, 3 to go - the Guards Van, the Aspinall Loco and the Loco Tender.

I think I may do the Tender next for a bit of build variation.

--------------------------------------

One of the things I want to do is make up a small diorama for the train/trains (I have more locos etc. I could do).

To this end, I have hauled out my box of Micromodels and located two of the kits I was thinking of using in one form or another - both "Lineside Kits". These have a useful selection of buildings I can either modify or build as is. I can then use the buildings I fancy for a small diorama.

Both the kits are somewhat old having been printed in 1949 and are faded, so I am looking to scan them and then do some restoration.

The first kit is the Country Station - this includes two platforms, station and canopy buildings, a signal box, a passenger bridge and signals.

The second kit has a goods shed, water tower and locomotive shed.

These are classic British railway buildings and are from the right period.

I will restore the two covers and post the pictures in due course.

Did some checking on those two Lineside Kits you mentioned. They look pretty good. Both should be good elements in your diorama.
Those locos you posted look good, also.
