Wild Wild West Japan Railway

I've been wanting to do a Wild Wild West project for a while. At Cardboard Warriors, there is a theme for April to design playsets in one month. I want to do it then.

But I need to prepare myself by doing a few steam locos, and the Yoshitsune at WestJR seems to be a good start. Totally wrong for the Wanderer, but good practice.

You can get the new version of the Yoshitsune at Access Denied, but not my repaint

Is the tender actually somewhat wider than the cab or is that an optical illusion?

That's the way it is designed and they show it that way at the website

Seems crazy to me, too

There are some examples where the tender does not fit with the loco due to a change in design or the re-use of older tenders.
One good example is the LMS 2-6-0 Crabs, where older Fowler design tenders were fitted rather than the L&Y style ones expected to be used. As a result the tenders were about 4" wider.
I attach a photo of the preserved one at Bury, The difference doesn't show up really but it is there!

On the other hand, the cars were generally wider than the tender, so why not have the tender as wide as the cars?

That connects in the memory with an account of maybe some time in late 1850s there was an I think Italian guy who is known for while visiting here in the US commenting on the small steam locos pulling trains of "cars as big as houses"

I kinda think of this as a wip. Made color changes, rearranged parts to make a less awkward build, and I'm going to narrow the tender.

I have an idea for the cowcatcher to make it more appropriate that I will try on this one. Most steam locos with cowcatchers will either make a triangular box with the tops sticking way up above the actual connection point. I think I have a way to handle it without being too difficult. I also want to slap a big ol' honking headlight in front of the stack.

Cowcatcher construction is something my brain can envision in wood, styrene, and metal, but right now it is coming up blank for paper construction unless built piece by piece from thin cardboard, or up to matboard, slices in a method similar to the above materials.

as for the tender width I agree it is a wip. if you extend the line of the locomotive wheels you can see the tender wheels are actually 1 block wider than the loco wheels. it does need to be narrower

Good to see you discuss your gaming kitbashes here, VK!

I for one appreciate how you take old models from Kaukapedia and give them new purpose. Hope to do that with their oldtimer cars too, the BMW Dixi is just a license-built Austin like those sold in the 1930s Philippines.
