An amazing amount of detailing Erik. Adding reading lights (functional or not) is a lot of additional work.

Adding the LED lighting will definitely make all of your additional work visible.

In a somewhat ironic twist, the real car this model is based on is now available for sale...

Note - you will need to register for an account if you want to see all the details, but I've attached the photos posted to that site of both the inside and outside.

Thank you Joshua for these magnificent pictures. Although the build of the interior is in an advanced stage already I will try to add a few details. At least I got a better idea how to create lighting fixtures in the bedrooms. In any case, model designer Cor did a very good job in creating the interior of the sleeper !

There are quite a few bathrooms on board, I wonder if these all had individual "drop pipes"? The pictures seem to show a few.

Regards,
Erik

Now that's what I always think of as a coupe and what I was referring to in my earlier post (when I said the single-seat "cells" looked so ineffective in terms of space usage.

LED there be light

Thanks gents for your continued interest and beautiful pictures. Very, very useful!

It's been a while but I have certainly not been idle. Finished the interior of both segments and joined them together. The overall length is approximately 52cm (slightly over 20 inches), quite a lengthily model.

Now it's time to add the lighting. I had been searching some time for suitable lighting and finally decided to use LED strips, based on feedback from another Dutch builder. However, the strips he used were not available anymore and I ended up buying a reel with 5m of LED lights (shortest available length....), dimmable via a controller (15 positions!) and operating on 220V with a small adaptor bringing it down to 12V.

I cut a length of 50cm from the reel, which consists of 10 segments of 5cm, each having 3 lights plus resistor. So all together 30 lights. I ran the lights right through the central corridor of the roomette section and straight across the bedrooms. The side corridor of the bedroom section does not have lights but should be illuminated sufficiently through the windows in the doors.

Needed to cut out openings at the top of the walls to allow for installation of the light strip (supported on a 1mm strip of cardboard). Here and there a bit of restoration work of the walls is still required.

As you can see, the lights work perfectly. Still have to check where they shine through the paper and then apply black paint or marker to mask the light.

Next will be the roof on each section and to close off both ends of the sleeper.

Erik

And here it is adding up quite nicely.

There is a Dutch expression which translates almost literally into American English: 'finger-licking good'!
