1/50 A7VU recolor

This is the second time I've built Nobi's A7VU. The first time was years ago, and I added a few rust streaks and some weathering with pastels. This time I decided to do a full Photoshop recolor. It's an easily assembled model, all the parts fit very well. There are glue tabs on only a few of the parts, so most of the time their placement is up to the builder. The side sponsons in Nobi's kit are incorrect: the few period photos of the prototype tank clearly show that the outside third of the bottom was angled upwards, not completely flat as Nobi depicts them. Now that I've built the model, I wish I took the time to correct this flaw.

There were no markings or insignia on the prototype either, so we'll have to consider this sort of a "what if" revisionist history model. Here's what didn't happen: instead of being a complete failure, the prototype trials were a resounding success, and Germany fielded a large number of A7VUs. For simplification of mass manufacture, the gun sponson bottoms were left flat. There you go. It's on the internet now, so it must be true.

I redefined all the rivets, and dirtied the underside and lower area of the hull and sponsons. I provided a lot of new parts for layering of hatches, vents, etc. I detailed the tracks, redrawing the sides and individual links. I cut opened the side hatches, and for an illusion of depth, glued some recessed black card stock the openings. The original model is 1/48, so I printed it at 96% (48/50) to obtain 1/50 scale.

Besides the photos, I've attached before and after jpegs of a couple of the pages. Enjoy!

Really nice job, love the rust and the enhanced rivets. The extra depth on the tracks and hatches and boards on the back make the model much more interesting.

I appreciate your kind comments, fellas. I plan to mount it on some kind of a base, but I haven't decided what to do yet.

You really did a nice job on this A7VU Don. Love the 3D effect of the layering.

It looks great, Don. And all of your rationalizations sound plausible to me.

Don too

Thanks Elliot and Don. I'm pretty happy with it. I'll bring it to the IPMC next month.
