Lower radar signature, when comparing to the protruding design.

The bow is shaped like that for a number of reasons.

The bulb modifies the way the water flows around the hull, reducing drag and thus increasing speed, range, fuel efficiency, and stability. Large ships with bulbous bows generally have a 12 to 15 percent better fuel efficiency than similar vessels without them.

For warships it also provides a convenient place to put the sonar transducer.

Very interesting concept, and striking appearance once again with stealth technology being incorporated into the hull design:

Zumwalt class destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I also thought it quite interesting that only 4 out of 12 core technologies needed for this design were completed by 2009; I wonder what the current status of the design is?

I would love to see this ship design progress further.

Cheers!
Jim

There are serious questions about the lack of air cover capability. I think there will be some serious changes in the final design of the several candidates. In any event, it looks like only 3 will be built.

Hopefully, two will be designed and built here.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the input. Work on the lower hull has stalled, I'm not quite sure what to do with it at this point. I suppose I'll try building it up and see what happens, but I'm not optimistic about its chances. In all likelihood this will end up being a waterline model.

In the meantime, I have begun work on the beta build (the alpha was scrapped incomplete due to numerous issues with the build) and it's moving along nicely. Stand by for pics...

Well, time to resurrect this project. Finally got up the motivation to finish it. The beta build was completed (it's not pretty though) and everything fits so I'm going to go ahead and release it as a waterline model (strk, that's your cue!) and see what happens. It's big, but simple, and in my opinion would be a great way to get someone into the hobby. Virtually no curves and nothing in the way of complex shapes! Biggest issue is figuring out how to make all those giant flat sheets STAY flat, but the beta has held up very well over the past couples months so I guess I got it right.

Cool, Avery...when and where will it be available?

Glad you are going forward with this unique ship!

Cheers!
