Thank you!
A more modest update today-added the skylight (I forget the nautical term) and the funnel. She's starting to take on the "personality" of the real thing. |

My International Maritime Dictionary calls it a "skylight." Carl might call it a claire voie. It might, however, actually be the "skylight cover" ("The top of a skylight having glass panes fitted in it, and usually hinged and oeprated from below.").
Whatever it's called, it looks good. By the way, do you have any special trick to make sure that the two sides of the books and masts are correctly lined up when you fold and glue them up? Don |

Interesting...clair voie...I like that! Yes, it is more of a skylight cover though.
As far as lining up the double sided parts, I don't have a real technique other than cutting and scoring very carefully. Making sure all the cuts are parallel and square, and that the score runs as close to the middle as possible. It is a bit fiddly, but I haven't found a better way to do it yet. I experimented with pins and bullseyes, but that just seemed to confuse things rather then make them easier. Either way, when you finish her up, I'd love to see photos! |

Update-added the most prominent feature of these ships, the enormous A-frame mast and boom. The mast looks a bit on the heavy side, but it's dead on according to the drawings. We'll see how it builds up.

A fine little model. Love those utilitarian vessels. Nice work on getting such a nicely shaped hull in sketchup. Taint easy is it.

Thank you Ron, Wilfried, OuterSketcher and Zathros!
OuterSketcher, thanks for the comment on my hull, and no it is not easy, but with a few plug-ins it can be done. The curvestitcher is essential, as is the weld plug-in. There is always a compromise between what can be designed and what can be built, and interestingly it seems that hulls designed in sketchup are almost by default buildable (at least the way I do it-I know of several ways that result in unbuildable hulls) with a little tweaking. And the shape is never compromised too much, if one designs carefully. I was lucky in that I had several years of experience with Sketchup before I got into design, and now with several years more there is little I cannot design. It is mostly a matter of patience. Zathros, I agree, these ships do have wonderful character. She's been a lot of fun to design. Only a small update today, added radar to the mast. |

Hello Avery,
is there any chance to see another little progress of this wonderful tiny ship in 2010? With lovely greetings the Wilfried |
