No, that's a mistake by Zeist, I have an original set (a bit yellowed and the cardboard is getting a bit brittle) but it definitely says 1:400

I'm afraid not. I built the Emsco way back in the early sixties as a boy, and I haven't studied the JSC model, so a comparison is difficult. But I do remember when comparing the Emsco model with photo's of the time, that it looked very realistic, with an endless row of lifeboats.
Has anybody tried building the Emsco copy?

I included a jpeg of the pages where the templates are found. If you need the full scale versions give me your e-mail and I will send them to you. You have to create the templates from the scaled drawing.

BModeler - Got your zip file of the PM article. Thanks. From what I can tell though, just like my copy, it doesn't have the info needed to make the 36" side, waterline and deck templates. These are what I was searching for. Recently, I bought a blueprint of the ship that these can be made from. It's 32" vs 36" but may be more true to the actual ship because of the secrecy of the design in the 50s. I'm going to try to scale them up to 36" on a copier and make the templates and will report in on how I make out. I'm also looking for a used Shopsmith to help build the model.
On a different note, does anyone have experience ordering directly from JSC in Poland. I'm interested in a number of their items.

You probably already tried this, but Popular Mechanics is found on Google Books...just do a Google search of S.S. UNITED STATES.

I have ordered quite successfully from JSC direct, online. I think they use credit cards, but shipping costs can be a concern if you order only one thing.
