Swedish Monitor FOLKE 1875, Paper Shipwright 1:250 -Finished

Hello, all!

Here are some pictures of my latest finished project, the monitor HMS Folke, last of seven Hildur-class monitors. Built in 1875, she differed from her sisters in that her single 240 mm main gun was mounted to fire aft, so that she might serve as a rear guard for a retiring flotilla.

The model is designed by David Hathaway of Paper Shipwright. It took me little less than a month to complete, and the model goes together well. There are no serious issues with the kit, only a few minor difficulties, none of which are too difficult to surmount for a modeler with some experience. The most serious of these 'problems' is the placement of the anchors; the anchors are stowed in different locations when one compares the diagrams to the completed prototype on David's website (Paper Shipwright - Card Models). If the anchors are mounted according to the diagrams, the supplied chain is too short. I chose to follow the diagrams and used the starboard chain to lengthen the port chain.

Overall, the model was a pleasure to build and can be recommended to anyone interested in ships of the period. Thanks to Mr. Hathaway for directing some of his energies toward this somewhat obscure ship type.

Cheers!

That's a little beauty Chris, great build. I have built a few of David's models and noticed differences between his prototype pictures and the published models too. There is no confusion if you follow the instructions though.

Hello Chris,
Nice job with your Swedish monitor. I always enjoy seeing one of the "Paper Shipwright" projects. They always look neat and clean.
