Majestic, 1894, 1:600

Since I know that almost everybody who reads this will be a fan of the era, I will go ahead.

I know that she does not follow the color scheme on the cover of Burt's book but after studying many, many photos of Majestic it appears that she can be presented in any number of different paintings. I do wish that I had put a white line on the upper hull but it is tough to get everything just right the first time through. There is a paint scheme where she has black ventilators (termed "cowlings" or "cowls" sometimes by both Parkes and by Burt). Another shows her with buff structures above a thin blue line on the superstructure.

So, my little model is sort of an in between statement... I was really just trying to get the stripes correct on the turrets!

Most of the readers of my threads know these ships already I think but I'll add a little...

After Royal Sovereign (and Hood) with her 13.5" guns there was a pair of foreign service ships with 10" guns and then the very popular Renown, also with 10" guns. This latter ship served as flagship for Fisher for several years and also as a sort of yacht for King Edward VII for a time. She also established the pattern for British battleships for the next decade. Majestic was similar in pattern to Renown but a little larger and mounted a new model of 12" guns. These guns, although of smaller bore and lighter shell than the 13.5" of Royal Sovereign, used nitrocellulose instead of powder and could fire farther and more accurately. Over the next dozen years the capabilities of the 12" guns were improved for successive models of battleships.

Note that I got the anchor shelves correct on this one (woo and hoo!!) and that the formast is not glued in and needs another spar and a searchlight.

Carl

Gorgeous work.

I wonder why they didn't just have one funnel twice as big.

Yours,

A very neat looking and very clean looking model.
It certainly makes the ships of that era look attractive, which is not always an easy thing to achieve.
I have to say I'm slowly becoming a convert. I never thought such could occur.

Kine and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

Ok...,

Hi Carl,

Another nice compact masterpiece Carl.
At this scale you can certainly turn them out quick!

Quite pretty for a battleship!

Almost a cross between a battleship and a cruise liner

Another interesting subject, and a beautiful design (and build), Carl!
And I like the scale you chose, again.

Are you planning on this one (and your earlier 1/600 scale beauties) available for sale?

Being totally ignorant of this era of warship I enjoy your descriptions for each of these builds and am grateful to learn a bit about these ladies...thanks!

Cheers!
Jim
