The Giant David: U.S.S. Johnston DD557 in 1/50 scale
I'm designing a model of the USS Johnston in one 1/50 scale and also 1/100 scale and for more detail I'm putting in all the rooms from the vegetable locker to the fire room. Why I'm doing this is for fun and as a way to remember the men and the ship of one of my favorite sea battles.

Well that be a nice project I have read up about the USS Johnston in seven months of service, Bravery really in the face of the teeth of disaster is something you can say about the men on that ship.

Of course you already realize that the 1/50 scale Johnston will be over 90" long right? Not that i mind watching someone build BIG!!! Im working on a 1/48 USS Nautilus, SS168, it will come out to over 92" plus! Its also going to be RC and of a different medium than Paper. The biggest paper im working on is a 1/48 U-boat by Kooklik/Dave repaint. It will be at around 57". Goodluck!

The story of the Johnston just makes me choke up. Real Heroes. I just don't have words that describe watching the History tale re-enactment of it. Reading it was amazing but to see what these men did, my 11 year old son was touched deeply by this telling, which is exactly what more people need to learn and remember. Go for it!

letting everyone know what I've been working on for the past week I've just been looking for pictures of different rooms and I was wondering if it's best to work on the hull first?

I would think unless your doing it as a cut out type the rooms are not going to be seen at all really.

I was thinking of somehow making it to where either I could have the hull on it and when I want to show the interior I could separate the hull from the decks.

Then you'd only see the upper-level decks-not the lower rooms. I, personally, think it is a crazy idea to even attempt to make the rooms- First you'd need to make the exterior perfect and master the design.

A Half Model would be interesting, but wow, that's a lot of research, but you could see the whole ship that way, the insides behind glass and the outside, well after all that, I'd put that behind glass too!
