Hello Peter,
Excellent work with the gun platform and searchlights. I like your "piece by piece" approach. I go at it the same way.

@ Michael, Don, papercut

thanks for the flowers

Little was done on the cruiser during the past few weeks.
The only progress so far is the aft bridge glued in place. The platform for the aft compass, as well as the compass itself, i´ve redrawn to match size and shape according to the GA plan. They are not yet glued in place, just to prevent damage during the further handling nearby ...
Next to the platform there are marks for 2 vent heads. I´m still not sure, if i use the original parts from the kit or replace the vents with some better shaped designs from PSW ...

The 6 main guns were shipped from the manufacturer to the shipyard as well, more or less ready for mounting.
I will add some hand wheels later on, resembling the training gear.

Thats it for the moment

Rgds
Peter

... jeeez, had to dig quite deep to recover the NOVIK thread back to the surface

After a few months of silence, there is some small progress on the cruiser.

Fitting out the deck goes on - two cable reels found their place as well as a vent head.
As with many of the old JSC kits, particularly the vents and boats are quite ..... odd very often
Therefore i´ve replaced the small vents (there are 2 more later on) with parts from PSW, copied and printed on tinted card.
For sure i´m going to replace the bigger vents as well. Anyway, am still looking for matching parts on PSW and HMV slipways

Safe access to the aft bridge is provided by stairs by now as well, using LC parts for the rails and simple tinted card for the stairs.

... another shift moved on to install the beams for the boat stowage (what is the correct english term for those structures?)
Again, i´ve replaced the original parts from the kit with own ones. They were quite massive, doubled T structures.
I´ve reduced the dimensions almost by half, making them appear much less rigid.

Once i have completed the vent heads, i can figure out the positions for the boats. Otherwise i might have trouble with the vents interferring with the boats ...

Looking just as nice as it did last autumn.
The railing work is excellent.

... there shall be Steam ...

One of NOVIK´s most distinctive marks are the sturdy funnels.

I´ve exchanged the parts from the kit with parts copied onto tinted card again.
Unfortunately, i could not find the very color shade i had in mind in the first place, so i choose the one closest to that.

The funnels are made up very simple. The shell is a simple tube, with 2 oval discs as formers on top and bottom.
Additionally, some kind of funnel cap is to put on top.

I´ve changed the design a bit, after discovering that the funnel will be short 4-5mm in length compared to the GA plan.
Anyway, by the time i noticed that discrepancy, the tubes were already glued ...
So what? I just prepared stripes of 4mm in height, which should come on top of the funnel tube.
To have a clean fit on the edges, i inserted a slightly smaller, short tube of dark tinted card.
A thin card stripe covers the seams.

... there shall be Air ...

The design of the vent heads is kept very simple as well. The appearance is more or less conical - and i don´t like it

Spying for replacements on "neighboring shipyards" did not produce any suitable design, since NOVIK´s vents are more bulbous.
Any other possible candidates where truly swan-neck style, which does not really match the design used on the cruiser.

I made the best possible compromise to resemble the shape, using parts of the original kit and some of other models.

All vents gathered on the GA plan to hold a short review

... now i still need to decide, which parts to be glued first - the vents on deck or the funnels ?
Each will obstruct the other one, regardless which way ...

They are called 'boat crutches'. Excellent build by the way, a pleasure to follow.
