Small update!

Finished the A/C parking deck. Despite Mainpirate's comment about it not fitting (and being too long where it goes into the deck-house), I only trimmed it to fit snugly into the slot width-wise. This way, all three posts lined up perfectly with their marked positions. They are painted wire.

Next is the first 'turret', namely the range finder. I did spruce it up by making it rotatable. This makes the connection a bit weak though. It can't handle capsizing. But that can be fixed by making the spindle taller. The actual scopes are metal with paper endcaps.

And that is all for now.

I kinda hit a snag...

I got most of the turrets completed, except for the barrels. I can roll a damn good straight barrel, but the ones on these guns are conics... And I can't test roll anymore, I'm out of spare blank (kit thickness) paper. And the paper also de-laminates when you roll it too much. I really need more tips and practice on this...

One tip for everybody who is thinking of making this kit, ignore the tabs on the turrets! Those were placed on the wrong edges, which makes closing them after putting in the axles very difficult!

Got a question for the bigger navy buffs. What were the Dutch Royal Navy uniform colours of WW2? I downloaded the 1/250 scale figurines from Paper Shipwright, but the colors are off.

I am going to try and answer your question about the barrels, go find you a pack of rolling papers.
Then take a straight tooth pick and sand into the shape you need for the barrel.
Now starting away from the gumed side, roll the cut down piece of paper around the tooth pick, moisten the gum edge and stick to the paper.
Check to insure you can remove the wood blank, a pin stuck into the end of the blank will help in this.
Apply a coat of nitrate dope, alow to dry, do this severial times.
Paint and you have a very realistic looking barrel.
Like anything else, this takes practise, but you will get the hang of after a few trys.
Rick

PS: Not sure about the colors for the uniforms, blue and white seem to be the norm.

Update!

I finally mustered up the courage to roll the barrels! Not too great a success (but no out right failures!), but passable. But then I tried to glue one of them to the axle and managed to break the axle off its glue points! So I had to open up the turret *again* to fix it in place. For safe keeping, I'll keep the turrets in a box untill I finish the rest of the ship.

Pictures will follow, as soon as my website goes back up...

A few update shots of the ship's outfitting in progress:

The 5 AA guns:

And one of the cranes, all rigged up.

Not a perfect job, but better then expected. Though on second sight, cutting out the holes in the crane booms was a bad idea and execution... Any more pictures are available in my website's galleries (In progress models menu link)
